Plastic injection molding doesn’t require a lot of hands, but it does require a relatively skilled supervision of the process and the assembly line.

As a result, plastic toys aren’t a good candidate for child labor. It’s just not cost effective compared to automated systems.

Stuffed toys, though, may benefit from tiny fingers doing fine stitching, so maybe that would’ve been a better candidate for comics like this.

I mean, I get that sentiment, but at the same time, that’s just actually the world we live in. Maybe the comic isn’t 100% accurate, but it’s good to be reminded once in a while, I feel.

Hard agree. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with celebrations, indulging and being merry on days like this. Remember the other, though, if you have the capacity.

Yeah, if anything, it should remind people that others aren’t as fortunate as us, and not only be thankful for our luck, but to try and make the world better day by day for everyone. That’s how I see it anyway.

China (and other Asian nations) but particularly China, which is a powerful and rich country allows this unfortunately. Hopefully an issue the government is trying to fix, but one of my main critiques.

The USA has political prisoners and uses child labour just like China. Please get off your high horse.

How many prisoners in the USA? How many laws against people who aren’t white? How many groups against people of colour are there in the USA?

The USA literally gave Hitler ideas about killing Jews and making laws against them. They also funded him and supported him through black market trade.

The USA didn’t want to go to war in WW2 because they mostly supported what Hitler was about. It took a massive attack by Japan to force their hand.

The USA is not a moral country; it is and always has been a terroristic state bent on global domination either through military might or economic force.

Once you learn the truth, its hard to keep it behind the curtain again.

“<subject> porn” has become shorthand for gratuitous objectification in order to cheaply moralise and has been for a while (eg “inspiration porn”).

They’re being a monumental arsehole about it, but they do have a point - this comic isn’t trying to change the system, or even point it out - it’s a cheap shot designed to make you feel satisfied in recogbising how screwed up things are.

A comic that would have been very different with the exact same images but a “remember that your child’s Christmas joy may come from exploited children elsewhere” and a suggestion to shop local, or even linking to ethical shopping guides and apps, international groups advocating worker and / or children’s rights would do a thousandfold more than the comic as it stands. Which like the subject matter it claims to decry is cheap, nasty and exploitative.

Basically: this comic as it stands is doing the exact same thing it’s “condemning”. Using exploited children as fodder to serve.

I’m not sure how you got that and how is this satisfying to anyone, its clearly pointing it out how the system is fucked up.

And a bunch of action links under the comic would be nice, though I’m sure after looking at it you remembered on your own you’ve yet to donate/phone a congressmen/send some anthrax this season. Takes all kinds 🌠

I do my absolute best I can to source anything I buy from countries that I know uphold labor standards. Beyond that, I also attempt to buy sustainably and especially from worker coops and union made goods.

So no, I don’t buy nothing from china(and other countries without strong labor laws). But I do buy very, very little from there, and only when there are no other options. Considering the only material goods I buy are bikes, Clothes, and food, it’s not the hardest.

The funny thing is that they think this is some grade A anti-capitalist porn, when all it really does is show how the countries that allow sweatshops are morally bankrupt.

And where are those sweatshops usually located?

Someone should put on Riders of Justice with Mads Mikkelsen and understand the bloodshed caused by one Estonian girl wanting a blue bike for Christmas.
