The 1990s had a word for being trapped inside a manipulative notion of human contact: AOL. Facebook and its ilk are the rebirth of that limited vision.
I get your point but it does exist, yet all these op-eds just sort of shrug their arms and say “well if ONLY there were something better!” after having done exactly 0 research (or perhaps directly maliciously)

To be fair, for 99% of the population, it doesn’t because they either 1) don’t know, or 2) don’t care.
