  • Great so why can’t he take 30 seconds out of a year to say that? I’m sure people would understand. The issue everyone is having is the lack of updates. So essentially yes it is abandoned. No updates either way, no word from developer either way been over a year = abandoned.

Great he responded to you but did he say when the next update will be? Or explain the lack of updates? I mean we could all makes guesses but the fact of the matter is it’s been abandoned and in its current state is broken. There is no reason to use it.

Additionally this is hurting Lemmy in general. People will try to use sync for Lemmy because it’s familiar and not realize the issues they are having are with sync because it’s broken not Lemmy. Then stop using Lemmy. I know you’re well intentioned but you shouldn’t give people hope when you know nothing more than anyone else.

  • I mean all of that is good and well but basically all of this is just your assumption. Its nice that you “believe” this but you don’t speak for the developer.

My issue is we have heard nothing at all from the developer. If the project was alive or just moving slowly I’d imagine we would hear something. Literally anything but we haven’t. If youre going to take people’s money be direct and just let people know what to expect. It’s not difficult to do. That’s great you sent issues to the developer when’s that update coming to fix it? This week, next year, never…

  • Not to say I’m not annoyed and they definitely should not be doing this except for their enterprise line. Would I buy another Synology again, no definitely not.

However most “consumers” buying a NAS are already pretty tech savvy. When this issue happened to me I googled it and found and applied the script in 15 or so minutes. Run the script essentially once a year or so when major updates come along. Hasn’t been a huge issue. The issue will be if /when they block this script or other fixes.

Unfortunately it seems like the dev has abandoned his app. I also used Sync for reddit and was happy to pay for the Lemmy version. Money down the drain. At best it seems that there will be updates every 18 to 24 months, maybe if at all. This may have been fine on reddit but Lemmy is constantly being updated and changing. So the app is more often then not broken or missing functionality in some.way. Honest answer is to find another app and donate to another developer.

  • Just honestly asking Im not a statistician. From a lay person looking high level this seems weird. The conclusion also does not match up with insurance prices that I’ve personally seen nor correspond with my experience.

I’m here for discussion not trying to put anyone down. Could someone just explain to me what I’m missing. No need to downvote. So if you take a non random sample of data how can you extrapolate that out so much? Does this data line up with other people’s data? What am I missing?

  • I mean technically it does. Isn’t this the Ashai Linux and isnt it very Alpha / Beta stage? As far as I’m aware this is not recommended for anything critical ( per the project maintainers) and unless OP loves tinkering he is most likely going to hit a lot of unique edge case scenarios that require a lot of time to unwind. If you have a very narrow use case this might work but is probably not worth the headache.

  • Docker as mentioned above is great especially if you’re going down the homelab rabbit hole. You’ll find it really useful to get familiar with for future projects.

Another alternative is to install DietPi. It’s an operating system for a raspberry pi. It has all these programs you mentioned with install scripts including docker and installing (and updating) is as easy as checking a box. Also has a pretty good community in case you run into an edge case.

I have not tried shucking drives but I imagine they should work. Currently have 20tb Seagate ironwolf ST20000NT001. The script takes two seconds to run and needs to be redone everytime you update the Synology software which doesn’t seem to be overly frequent. Running the script or not you have the same full functionality. Script just removes the warnings.
