Lol I did this with 2 laptops that had different CPU generations and it still worked, haha. Had a laptop I was using as home server with a 2nd gen Intel i5, and a laptop I was using as personal laptop with an Intel core 2 duo and just took the drives and swapped them, everything booted normally, no problems. Linux is awesome.

Disclaimer: I’m an android user and would love to switch to a Linux phone.

Problem with android is updates being locked by carriers or Google themselves. To get updates after 2-3 years you basically have to buy a phone that has unlockable bootloader and supports LineageOS, AND you have to have the technical skills to Install and set up LineageOS, I do, but no one else I know does, they just happily buy a new phone because app X,Y,Z stopped working on their old phone, which is perfectly usable. And if you have a phone where bootloader is locked (I’m looking at you, Verizon, EVERY PHONE THEY SELL THEY LOCK), oops there’s an expensive paperweight, can never be running anything other than Android 8 or whatever it came with.

Haha that’s awesome! These days I’ve pretty much settled on basic defaults to make life easier: Ubuntu and Gnome. Though with snaps getting more invasive, I’m considering jumping ship and moving to the OG, Debian. I settled on Ubuntu years ago when they did a ton to improve driver compatibility and automatic installation for WiFi drivers on laptops back in the Ubuntu 7/8 days (2007/2008). Briefly tried out Linux mint in 2014, and went back to Ubuntu after a few years, gnome worked a bit better for workflow than the traditional windows approach with a taskbar for open windows.

Fluxbox… Now there’s a name I haven’t heard in a long time… Back in the days of wintel dialup modems I was trying out Linux as a teenager and trying to get modem support working to get the internet, and at one point I tried out a Linux distro, DSL (Damn small Linux) because it was set up to be installed and run from a USB flash drive with persistent storage on the drive I think. And the window manager of DSL? You guessed it, Fluxbox! Can’t believe its still around.

Interesting because I’ve had the opposite problem historically. Windows always seemed to be doing random shit in the background, doing what? I can’t tell you but it always seemed to be using the disk or CPU to do some background process, and it always happened, every day at random times oops disk churn. You’ll notice it the most with a regular hard drive because it’s slow and makes noise when its being accessed (vs. an ssd which is silent)

Yeah, same issues. I bought my dock during the summer steam sale and didn’t use it much, but now that I’'ve tried using it more I feel like I want to send it back and get a refund, but it might be too late. I keep hoping the issues will get fixed with firmware updates, but so far they haven’t.

I’ve been waiting yeeears for a Linux phone. Can’t wait until the day finally comes. Tried Ubuntu touch out on an old nexus 4, but it was slow due to old hardware, and I didn’t like the fact you couldn’t just run Linux apps, they had to be special built for Ubuntu touch (unless you did a container and vnc kind of thing). I’ve been eyeing postmarketOS but I’m a little confused if it supports VoLTE which I think is a requirement now on most USA towers.

I think once the hardware support gets there with better battery life, ability to sleep and still get calls notifications, etc, the app ecosystem shouldn’t be a problem with waydroid as a backup

Do it! I’m not a very materialistic person, but there have been a few things I’ve bought in my life that genuinely made me happy and were just such a joy to use that I was kind of in awe each time using it, and the steamdeck is one of those things. People put a lot of focus on the hardware and the strength of the graphics, etc. But for me the impressive part is the software polish, the OS, the config menu’s, etc work so well and the thing was just so well thought out. Coming from a developer and someone who adores linux and open source, the thing is just a joy to use.

I would however go with a third party dock if you want one. I bought the steamdeck dock and it just doesn’t work correctly 100% of the time, I have random issues here and there. There was a reddit thread 6 months ago listing all the issues someone had and I had almost every one at one point or another. I’ve heard the cheaper 3rd party docks have been better.

Which is funny, because you’re posting this on lemmy, instead of reddit, so you clearly don’t like a single company having complete and monopoly-like control, the browser wars should be viewed the same way. Non-Chromium browsers (but mostly Firefox) are the only thing stopping Google from having basically complete control over the internet, by having only 1 dominant rendering engine that they control.

Randomly thought of this today: how did you install kde? Did it come packages with your distro or did you install it manually? I was wondering if maybe there’s a config file that’s supposed to be set with your timezone or something that isn’t set (specifically for the night mode feature) and its defaulting to a hardcoded default in the code or another config or something?

Because power-pc is a different CPU architecture, those apps would require emulation or a VM I think. A VM is possible already I believe.

Aaand that’s how badly Microsoft messed up the marketing for the surface line. I didn’t know the surface line had laptops, I thought the surface line was a tablets only (With the detachable keyboard base). 2 random internet people who are involved in the tech world had 2 completely opposite understandings of their product line because they made the marketing and branding so bad.

I mean… I don’t think that’s common place. I’ve had the same Ubuntu install from 16.04 I think? All the way to 23.10 that I’ve migrated and upgraded from various laptops one to the other, and my ~/.cache folder is only 3.6gb out of a 1tb nvme drive.

I don’t know how its sourced for sure, but are you using a vpn? It could be figuring out what servers you’re connected to and their geographical location so if using a VPN and connecting to a different continent, it could be pulling timezone from that continent.
