I woke up to my alarm, checked the weather, and atop the page in bold red: Breaking- trump targets (school in my area). I’ve already seen my town listed in another article last week because my state has sanctuary cities, I didn’t even know we were one. My son’s school is mostly Spanish speaking folks.
That headline had me in a panic. Especially because the article just said “targeted”. Targeted how? Cutting funding for one town? Sending ICE? Wtf does that mean.
I check my States subreddit (the only place I still lurk) and nothing. I was afraid to send him to school this morning.
Not to mention the shootings that can happen, that’s always in the back of my head, but now this too? I can’t wait until this year is over, and I cannot believe I am beginning to consider homeschooling from fear something could happen to my son in school :(
I’m right there with you. My kids (who are 7th or 8th generation US citizens, at least, on both sides) go to a school with a high Mexican student body. I’ve been terrified for months about the exact same thing. I hate this.
Me too. We shouldn’t have to live like this. No one should live in fear, yet so many do across the earth. We gotta support eachother now more than ever
Definitely. Good job being a good parent. Stick with it. That’s maybe the best thing we can do for the world now and in the future.
Trump wants you to be scared, he wants you to pull your kid out if school, and he says all sorts of shit that the media spreads every day, but keep in mind: courts have blocked his illegal deportations, they have blocked his tarrifs, and ICE is struggling to meet the administration’s demands. This is a campaign to terrorize and isolate people from eachother, and taking your son out of school is letting them win.
Obviously you should do what you feel is right by you and yours, but pulling back from your community because they’re the ones being targeted is exactly what Trump wants.
Thank you for saying this. You’re absolutely right. I posted this with fear in my heart this morning.
Thank you to you and everyone here for helping me keep strong.
For the record, you are also absolutely right to fear for your child. A good parent cares, and you care.
Heck, I’m way over on the other side of the Atlantic and I’m scared for my kids in school every day. The shootings and gang violence and knife attacks and car rammings have spread here too.

Yeah, after the initial shock this morning it’s easy to understand this is fear mongering. My state is fighting it.
We are long standing Americans, we are at minimum fourth gen, to basically English settlers depending at what grandparent you look at- but it’s still terrifying.
These are his friends, his classmates, mostly puerto rican… but… no one should live in fear.
Probably just funding stuff, given what you said about sanctuary cities.
Take a deep breath, focus, and check if the article body identifies what specifically is being targeted. News articles always sensationalize the titles anyways.
I dunno, I feel like the sentiment from that last sentence of yours there is part of the reason we’re in the mess we’re in to begin with
If that’s the case, it’s possible I’ve communicated poorly. The overall sentiment should be:
- Don’t Panic. Seriously, panicking almost always results in poor decisions.
- Discern the threat model from all available intel.
- Plan accordingly.
Love it, thank you.
Im so glad there was a place to vent my worries today. Y’all are awesome.
I hope I didn’t come across as a dick to you, btw, as I do share the sentiment you seem to be espousing, believe it or not, including your original contention of the media sensationalizing things… But it seems it’s always the wrong things anymore, at least, doesn’t it? Panic about just the entirely wrong things, instead of what we should very clearly be concerned about.
Anyway, my apologies again if I contributed to any undue stress or bad feelings or what-have-you… I just want to see everybody home safe and happy at the end of the day, and it honestly breaks my heart a little bit to know that we now have a government in America that isn’t the slightest bit concerned with even giving lip service to that ideal.
No worries, shit happens. As long as I was able to drill them through quelling their panic and evaluating the threat, I did my part.
You’d be surprised how universal this skill is, and conversely, his easily a panicked person can be coerced into a decision that benefits a bad actor. Look over some of the banking and computer scams that come from India, I guarantee most will hinge on keeping the target panicked and not thinking clearly.
The not knowing it’s a sanctuary city reminds me that it might not be; their list includes a lot of errors (as always). For instance, someone in Huntington Beach told me it was on the list even though that is one extremely conservative city in So. Cal… It’s probably about as well researched as their tarrifs were.
It is certainly terrible in general being alive in America in 2025, though, and doubly true with kids. I’m not even sure if homeschooling is going to fix that, though. My kids aren’t old enough for K-12, but my family always gets into trouble with authority so it’ll be a bit tricky teaching them how to navigate it all.
That really sucks. My heart goes out to you. I can’t give any advice, I think others in here are more qualified for that.
I’m so sorry. I remember not wanting to send my child to school under the W. admin, I can’t begin to imagine how much this affects you. Fwiw, Parkrose Permaculture has YT videos on unschooling, which is Montessori home school, as best I understand her.
Send em. If this behavior doesnt radicalize them, then hope for the future is lost. Just make sure your kid identifies with those being kidnapped and not the jackbooted thugs doing the kidnappings.

It doesn’t matter if he’s the one being taken away or not, he could still witness it, I could still traumatize him. He could try and fight one of the officers, because my son has no sense of fear and an inflated sense of justice often. These are his friends and classmates.
Trump is tageting the neighboring town for having a trans athlete. Last week, my town was pointed out for being a sanctuary city. Compiling fear.
Trauma doesn’t make a person stronger. Trauma doesn’t guarantee radicalization.
Thank you for pointing this out to this commenter.
Ok keyboard warrior. Calm down.
