The burrito bowl I got for lunch today was a bit too spicy for me. Afterwards, my nose got very runny. It’s not the first time this happened, so I decided to look it up. Lo and behold, there is a term for this!
ETA: I didn’t choose the thumbnail, it generated automatically. Sorry if it seems irrelevant to the post.
I’m eating spicy food every day for over a decade now and still get a runny nose almost every time.
So if I need to win a hotwing hotsauce challenge with something as satan as magnum 357 or sneaky like a carolina reaper sauce, I just need to drop a fuckton of Benadryl and smoke a pack before the competition so at least my runny nose won’t give me away failing.
Besides I like bumming smokes from the Hat Man
“Rhinorrhea”. Literally diarrhea for your nose. TIL.
Compare gonorrhea. The Rhea is from Greek ‘flowing’, it’s origin of the flow differs.
This phenomenon is why I like my Pho on the spicy side, especially if I have a cold. The spicier the better, cleans out the sinuses, lol
This is why I have to save Vietnamese food for like the twelfth date
A runny nose can also be caused by reflux, particularly if it happens after food that is not spicy such as fatty foods or big meals. It’s often overlooked because it’s not the typical heartburn symptom.
So that’s likely why I get a runny nose lately when I eat pizza or Jersey Mike’s.
Yep I was in the same boat for years, runny nose or coughing and feeling sick mostly after eating out. Just powered through it thinking it was this or me just having a week stomach. Eventually figured out that reflux meds like Gaviscon helped and then had a gastroscopy and was diagnosed with Laryngopharyngeal reflux… Took years to put 2 and 2 together because I never got ‘heart burn’. Hopefully not as serious for you!
Omeprazole is my best friend.
because the acid irritates the nasal passages too, causing hypersecretion.
Another related term I learned recently is exercise-induced rhinitis. I get that once or twice a year after jogging outside when there’s a lot of pollen in the air
You can also get runny nose from exercise through Post-Exertional Malaise
That sounds like pollen induced rhinitis.
also its a symptom of ashtma, ahstma isnt just wheezing and bronchial spasms, its also the rhinitis.
It’s an allergy. It can trigger inflammation in upper airways, in the lower, or both. When you have asthma, that inflammation usually means fun times. My sister had this exact combo (pollen and fungal spores allergy, rhinitis, asthma). It’s rough.
I get a runny nose in cold weather without fail, like 5°C or less, it gets all red too, it’s pretty embarrassing and makes me put on extra concealer I’d prefer to go without. Anyone else?
That’s normal. So is getting a runny nose after eating spicy food or during exercise. People just want to feel special so they make up stuff like this.
If it’s cold my nose is like a leaky faucet.
My nose also runs nonstop if I’m tired enough, which is embarrassing and disgusting. Like I will literally just have snot dripping out of my nose if my hands are full and I’m not constantly blowing or wiping it. I feel like a toddler.
I think it’s pretty common and it turns out it’s just condensation.
