With all that’s going on in the reddit world, I’m thinking of leaving it behind, this may be a better place

Reddit has been falling since 2015 at least to me

    1. Redditors became aggressive when they disagree with you
    2. Ads everywhere
    3. Politics 99% news 1%
    4. Mods became s%!t

I used Apollo so the ads part wasn’t an issue for me. But the moment they announced their API disaster, I said enough is enough.

I feel lemmy is light years ahead.

Today I bit the bullet and set up lemmy, mastodon and kbin. I will try to workout my new information path the fediverse way.

Will see how it works out.

I hope someday Lemmy can replace reddit for the super-specific stuff I occasionally search for.

Like you can’t just Google “best men’s belts.” That just gets you ads masquerading as blogs, listicles, and other SEO crap. You have to search for “best men’s belts reddit” and then read through 10 threads, collate the results in your brain, and only then make a decision. Classic forums are dead so this seems to be the only way to find actual discussion about things, with real people’s experiences.

Example 2: Googling something like “Mandalorian s2 ep4 reddit”. Yeah that aired years ago, but I like reading people’s reactions and thoughts, and about the little Easter eggs I missed. And yes I do this for every episode of every show I watch, don’t judge me.

Same, half the time when looking up advice for buying things, or seeing what apps and websites are legit, I go to duckduckgo and type

      !ddgr something blah blah

I hope someday in the future it will be !ddgl something blah blah

The API price hike was the push I needed - I’d already been considering leaving since Reddit was my last mainstream social media account. There’s definitely more activity here than I saw before, enough that so far, I’m able to get the main things I was enjoying Reddit for just fine here. I am going to make it a point to participate more here than I did Reddit though so I can be part of the change I want to see.

I’m not sure when, if at all, I’ll be ready to delete my Reddit account. If Apollo stops working, I won’t really use it anymore. But it’s definitely going to be on a back burner for me from now on at minimum.

Me too. I’m excited to see Lemmy grow. I feel like Reddit has been drifting away from it’s original status as the “front page of the internet” since it started to fall into the mainstream social media trap.

Much like @RoaringSilence@feddit.de, I setup a Mastodon and Lemmy account this week. I am really interested in the idea of federated social media because I am quite tired of watching platforms follow the same pattern and the decentralized model seems to make a lot of sense.

We’ll see what Lemmy brings in the future! Welcome to my fellow Reddit refugees.

I’m trying to leave. I desperately need a better Lemmy iOS app to make it happen.
