Hello !

As Mint is based on Ubuntu, I’m wondering if it will follow the missteps (to me at least) Ubuntu is doing to demote *.deb packages in favor of snaps?

Well that based on Ubuntu 23.10’s New Software App Will Demote DEBs (Apparently) post, and its lemmy.ml discussion.

Edit: Responses indicate, at least so far, Mint is not following Ubuntu’s decisions regarding snap. Thanks to all who responded !

    I don’t think so, Mint have generally been pretty good about avoiding some of Canonical’s sillier decisions, and as of 2020 snap is disabled in Mint by default. (I assume it still is, if not I’m sure someone will correct me.) They also seem to be pretty critical of the direction snaps are taking in general:

    as you install APT updates, Snap becomes a requirement for you to continue to use Chromium and installs itself behind your back. This breaks one of the major worries many people had when Snap was announced and a promise from its developers that it would never replace APT.

    A self-installing Snap Store which overwrites part of our APT package base is a complete NO NO. It’s something we have to stop and it could mean the end of Chromium updates and access to the snap store in Linux Mint.
