Marvel was not that big in mainstream culture before the MCU.

Spider-Man has been pretty iconic since the 60s. My mom could easily recognize Spider-Man, but probably would struggle with Batman.

  There were some blockbuster Batman movies in the 90s, hell there was the Adam West show going back to the 60s.
