I’m pretty sure that the moment they begin charging for Facebook they loose 90% of their userbase. The same would happen with most social networks. I’m pretty sure that once people think about it for a minute, they will come to the conclusion that social networks are not worth it.

Even if most people would still use Facebook if it cost 1EUR/year just like whatsapp did in the beginning, I hope and think that people would then be much more critical of data breaches and advertising

Because you posting everything about your life isn’t enough, instead we need all the telemetry at all times. PLEASE start charging for Facebook. I’d love some of that drama with my popcorn.

I’d pay not to ever hear facebook or instagram mentioned in a conversation ever again.

I’ve donated a little to open source social media sites, so if you’re asking ‘would anyone pay for social media in general?’ then the answer’s ‘yes’.

Facebook specifically? No - it’s payed for by advertisers who like that they can target very specific demographics.

It’s too late for them but I’d consider a paid ad-free/tracker-free social network if one were to exist.

At least they are being open, and careless people can’t say “I didn’t know they collected so much of my data” anymore.

I think this is more momentum for the FOSS and self hosted social networks and for privacy awareness in general, or I hope it is…
