I think it would really only take a few extra features to make Pidgin the best IM application out there in every possible way:
- Better support for OMEMO encryption in XMPP
- Better support for voice and video calls in general, in a way that facilitates this for all protocols that support voice and video.
- Support for encrypted Matrix messages
- An android port?
