Some of you may already have known about this project, the CJDNS project.
The purpose behind this software is to create a meshnet network in a friend to friend networking. It’s ideal for localized networking where you can connect to a location as a hub or over the Internet using UDP. If you op for actual meshnet using Wifi, the range can be effectively 7 miles.
As an added benefit, the connection between two endpoints in this network is encrypted end to end.
The reason why I brought up project is to raise awareness that you have the options if things on the Internet as whole goes side way with over-litigious regulation, oppressive DDOS attacks and invasive behavior on the Internet as whole.
We also have open source federated services like Gitea (Work in progress), Mastodon, PeerTube, and of course, Lemmy and all of those could be hosted and networked on the Meshnet Network without much difficulty and resources.
There are some cons that I won’t lie about:
-
Network Effect will be severely lacking with small population using the Meshnet.
-
You may want to get DNS registration for various services you run to make it easier for your friends/people to connect to your services. (Just add IPv6 that is only visible on the meshnet for your DNS records.)
-
It won’t be easy for non-tech people to set up and use.
- Hypothetically possible that you could create Raspberry Pi devices, flash it, and have GUI installer to guide the non-technical user on setting it up and use it on their network. (The IPv6 can be made visible to their local network with firewall to protect them.)
Again, this is a last resort option if no alternative exists.
Hope you all have a wonderful day.
