I think there’s a few reasons behind the slow-tracking of processing asylum claims.

One is that they were just cutting anything they could in the name of Austerity. Just another way to funnel money from the poor to the rich.

But the other is I think the same reason why the right-leaning press have had small boats on their front pages for years at this point, despite the reason for small boat crossings being a lack of safe legal routes and accounting for a small percentage of immigration - to make people hate immigrants.

Why? Because the right mostly do well amongst the older generations. However, the Boomers are dying off, and younger people aren’t moving to the right the way they used to because they don’t have the assets to make that a sound financial choice.

So the choice for the right becomes between changing your policies to appeal to more people, or creating wedge issues which you can make your entire election platform. And they’re not going to go to the effort of working out policies which would help people, are they? So create a “crisis” involving “those people” and be the party who’s against “those people”, and you should do all right.

Unless an even more racist party comes along, of course…

Yup. I keep encountering it, but I’ve only ever encountered it in the context of old people going “I don’t understand what these young people are talking about!” seemingly having passed into the “I don’t remember what being a child was like” stage of their lives.

Okay. Commentators have been saying for a while that a victory for him could be a signal of the American left learning that actually progressive policies and candidates can be successful and on the Democrats as a whole actually moving to the left. Let’s hope that that’s actually true, rather than it being dismissed as “New York’s different”.

Hopefully, the recent buzz around AOC will help, too. I’ve been seeing more of Crockett in the news, as well.

We’ll see. This is definitely a very positive move, though.

Okay, if you prefer to frame the flaws in your reasoning like that, then I’m happy to do so. That doesn’t make the conclusion less flawed. The conversation isn’t about the hows and whyfores of formal logic, it’s about whether the conclusion is likely to be true.

None of what you’ve said ameliorates the faulty logic I highlighted. You have instead just added more assumptions.

There’s a few wild leaps in logic, here.

Firstly, we know of life evolving once. Just one planet. In the entire universe. We can postulate that with such a vast universe (and possibly multiverse) that it’s probable that other life exists elsewhere, but we don’t know that. It could be a unique event or an incredibly rare event. We can’t say, because 1 is way too small a sample size to extrapolate from.

But you’re not even extrapolating from 1 datapoint. You’re extrapolating from something that you think might be true at some point in the future.

If we’re in a simulation then we’d have no idea what’s outside that simulation, so we’d have no idea what an easter egg would look like.

But it’s not my job to find evidence to prove other people’s claims. It’s their job to provide evidence for those claims. That’s true regardless of whether the claim is that we live in a simulation, that we’re ruled over by a benevolent omnipotent god, or whether there’s a teapot orbiting between Mars and the sun.

Generally speaking I tend to just leave the C: drive for utilities and use external drives for data, as much as possible. I understand that Linux handles files and stuff somewhat differently, but that would still generally be my plan.

Yeah, that’s kind of what I’d gathered. I’ve got a few dead computers around and I’m going to take a drive out of one of those and use that for the Linux while keeping Windows on the drive it’s already on.

I tend to use perplexity now. It gives me useful results maybe 80% of the time. That’s a low hit rate, but for many queries it’s better than other search engines.

Or i just search a dedicated site. If I’m looking for an overview of something i search Wikipedia directly. If i want to know what an actor has been in i stretch IMDb directly. And so on.

Say what you want about the man, but he’s got stamina. There’s hardcore gooners who wouldn’t manage 10 waifus a day, 4 days in a row.

Every Windows machine I’ve ever had just gets slower and slower over time. It takes several years, but after 2-3 years it’s taking ages to do basic tasks. I’m just kind of tired of it at this point.

Cachy is what I’mgoing to try first. I’m semi-resolved to dual-booting for the video/photo stuff.

I’ve also got a vague plan at some point in the future to buy a desktop mac and one of those boxes where you can just switch monitors/input device routing at the press of a button. Maybe put the video/photo stuff on that. Although, that said, I’ve got a colleage who is a graphic designer on the side and the only reason he’s got a Windows machine is that even the biggest mac he owns can’t handle the graphics. He’s an Apple evangelist yet even he says that Apple does not do graphics well.

The stuff I do is nothing like the stuff he does and I don’t need anything as powerful as him, but I am still aware that “get a mac to do video stuff” isn’t necessarily the best plan. But I’m likely getting one anyway for other reasons, so it can’t hurt to try.
