I code one feature for my job in a sprint and it becomes a value generator for a decade, making the companies hundreds of thousands of dollars each year.
Software developers create value out of thin air for companies, value that management and leadership is unable to generate.
But live/real time text communication with relatively informal conversations is new.
Going back 100 years, if you were writing text to have a conversation you were likely sending a letter, this asynchronous communication method means that you were putting more time and effort into each message as it was a lot of effort to get the message to another person (even if that is just hand delivering it to your neighbor)
You also weren’t expecting immediate responses. The expectation is that a decent amount of time is going to pass before the next phase of the conversation.
Instant messaging is basically brand new as far as the history of written language goes. So with it comes new paradigms in discussion.
Emojis offer a great way to express emotions that succinctly convey a lot of information. Great for back and forth conversations.
Being able to react to a message with 👍 is awesome and really not much different from all of the other initialisms that have been developed on the Internet over the years.
I was playing all night last night on low (second from bottom) at 1440p and getting constant 60fps with occasional frame hiccups if I zoomed quickly or scrolled way across the map quickly.
I have a 2080 non super.
So there must be something else going on.
On the very lowest settings I was getting around 80-90 fps.
I think biometrics are being misused, they can be helpful and useful for access control, but not so much for privacy.
A thumb print + badge scan as factors for entering a restricted area, makes sense, but the goal is not privacy there (arguably it’s the opposite)
Plus one for shoehorn, underrated and my friends always make fun of me for using one for some reason. Meanwhile I’m standing with my shoes on comfy while they tear their fingers up trying to slide their shoes on
Anyone who says “a real artist wouldn’t …” Needs to spend some more time at the gallery.
Because I can’t set the time for 8.5 minutes from now, because I’m taking a shit.
You should still check, as the tpms may only warn you when it gets too low but generally driving even just a couple psi off can have a big effect on fuel economy and tire life.
I mean, if you’re worried about Google doing something like that, they could just as easily manufacture statements by you with enough supporting evidence to screw you no matter what you say.
The owner of the lemmy instance you are on, can sign in as you and leave comments all over the place and hide them from your view and manufacture the logs to look like it was posted from your IP address.
This is a real thing, they are called operators and it is their job to oversee the cell, start and stop jobs, resolve bottlenecks, identify upstream problems and gracefully handle them, and emergency stop the system when needed.
I think it’s because of touchscreens since that behavior on a touchscreen more accurately emulates physically manipulating the items in the screen.
I think trackpads emulating a mouse should be considered a poor implementation, a trackpad is different than a mouse and we should utilize that with the design. A trackpad is best imo when combined with gestures, almost as a hybrid between a typical touchscreen and mouse. For example pinching motions, two/three finger tapping, two handed use, etc are all options for a trackpad that don’t work (or work poorly) on a mouse.
This cracks me up because it is often said with such confidence, but it is just wrong.
If you have 10 people, 8 have an intelligence score of 1, 1 has a score of 5 and 1 has a score of 10. The average is 2.3 which means that 80% of the people are below average.
The median is the only thing that is going to guarantee 50%.
When I went through the immigration process with my spouse we were asked to provide Bank statements, Affidavits from friends, coworkers, peers, and family, Photographs (including being interrogated about who was in the photos), Perform separated interviews where personal questions were asked and then cross verified (what side of the bed do you sleep on, what color is her toothbrush, what are some shows or movies you watch together, etc), We were notified that we may be surveilled, to verify that we spend time together (don’t know if it actually happened or not) My spouse had to have a full biometric physical performed and the result given to USCIS, Medical history, And about 100 pages of forms where you are required to disclose all affiliations with any groups you may have, political affiliations, etc.
Granted this is for permanent residency, not a visa, but the level of information you are required to divulge to USCIS is astronomical.
It’s been many years thankfully since I have had to do anything for USCIS, but it would not surprise me if they already ask you for social media information, and regardless of if they ask you, they are definitely finding everything they can about you.
The kicker is that everything is discretionary, so it doesn’t matter what they ask, since they can just say no if they feel like it anyway.
Amiunique is a good one that demonstrates how just with the specs of the device you are using (os, browser, screen size, browser version, user agent, color pallette, js engine, language, keyboard type, etc) you can create a totally unique fingerprint that can be used to track you without ever knowing your name, or who you are as a person.
A house is 1/5th of your annual income and you can’t save up a down payment?
A 20% down payment for you is only 2 weeks of your salary.
You could save income of about 6 hours worth of work each week to have a 20% down payment in a year
With an FHA loan, a down payment is 0.6% of your annual income.
Every driver is a racist, that’s their job, car racists.
You think someone writing custom software can’t solve problems?
Also, a 3d printer is just an additive cnc machine, learning how to operate, tweak, tune, write gcode, etc, is an incredibly important skill in manufacturing and r&d, CAD skills are not niche, they are incredibly sought after.
Learning how to use and modify a 3d printer at an early age, as well as learning software development, and practicing connecting disparate systems is one of the best things you could do if you want to become an engineer.
“He can’t do back of the envelope calculations, think quickly, or solve problems.” This is just made up, completely. That is literally just a fantasy created in your head.
But they didn’t implement rcs, which isn’t even new, android messaging has supported rcs for four years. Rcs as a whole is 15 years old.
If the plan was to implement rcs, they could have done that during the phase out of sms. But just removing one of the key features that helped people adopt signal (a feature which no other real messaging app did since the dissolution of Google hangouts), with no plan or consumer messaging about a replacement, and basically no real reasoning communicated to the end user is a pretty bad decision regardless of a ‘we know best’ mentality.
I just hope they create a more linear based Zelda next. The novelty of the new style wore very thin for me with totk.
