So the Hamas oct 7 terror attack (which we all condemn) hit about 1/3 security forces and 2/3 civilians.

And Israel is hitting like 90% civilians in Gaza, and even civilians in the West Bank and Lebanon, where Hamas and Hezbollah are or were keeping low.

I always thought it was a terrorist organization against an Apartheid state.

But it seems to look more and more like a terrorist state against freedom fighters.

Ashamed my country abstained, but I am happy Canada didn’t.

Me neither. Apparently, some schools teach this, but most only learn this in college.

Which is why the culture war so often involves College educated van non-College educated.

I’m on the College side of the culture war, but we must kind of acknowledge the truth that we had extra education that the other side did not.

Some of them might resent us for it, some of us might be snobby about it.

But at root, that’s where the culture disparity stems from.

The best way to give domestic workers an advantage would be to really raise property taxes, but make them subtractable as a tax credit. Credit… not deductible, so overall tax burden on workers would be lower.

This would be an easy and logical step away from taxing labour and moving to taxation of land.

You would be wrong. Many of the most extreme settlers are Americans or Europeans and they do what they do with total disregard for Israeli peace, safe in the knowledge they can always escape to the US or Europe.

But this move does have a huge impact. It is the first time the US has sanctioned Israel for Apartheid crimes and ethnic cleansing. The immediate impact is small, but it opens the door towards BDS.

And BDS is how we ended Apartheid in South Africa and Rhodesia. It will work even better against Israel, since they are totally dependent on aid from the West.

This, and other similar cases, are exactly why civilized countries don’t bomb hospitals.

There are many people who are highly immobile in hospitals.

I have no respect for Hamas, but the IDF is at least as bad. They only try to pretend they are civilized.

They always claim Hamas uses hospitals to perform attacks, but their evidence is even less convincing than the WMD evidence Bush used to justify the Iraq invasion.

In most countries “winning” the election implies having a majority.

In coalition countries like ours, it only means becoming the biggest party.

Hence why the headline might lead people to a wrong conclusion.

Practically speaking, it’s more important which potential coalition has a majority. And the parties on the right don’t have a clear majority, nor do the left parties.

So it will either be a center-right or center-left coalition.

Center-right will be attempted first, since we customarily let the largest party initiate, but it will be quite difficult since we have two chambers and different parties on the right are big in different chambers.

If he fails, center-left has a clear majority in both chambers with the same parties.

Edit: need to correct a mistake. Center-left also doesn’t have a clear majority in both chambers. Two of the big parties in this election have very few seats in the other chamber.

But not a problem, we often have coalitions that don’t have a majority in the Senate. Our House (this election) is more decisive and the Senate more facilitating.

He only got 25% of the vote and it’s a consolidation of other right wing votes, so there is no right wing majority.

So it’s not much different than earlier elections, but now it’s concentrated in his party, making him the largest.

I remember being in school as a teenager and the pro-life activists coming to our classroom to graphically describe partial-birth abortions that suck out the brains of babies. I was pro-life for the next ten years or so.

Obviously, that’s not representative at all of what a normal abortion looks like. But it’s much less galvanizing to show a 6-8 week old bunch of unrecognizable bodily fluids, which is much more representative of the average abortion.

A clear timeline also puts a healthy pressure on pregnant women to make a difficult decision earlier, when everything is easier, less impactful and less risky, instead of postponing it.

I’m not an expert, but the happy balance seems to be with easy accessibility up to 12 weeks and progressive restrictions after that.

This was also the gist of the original Roe v Wade, which established a trimester framework.

Once you assign rights to the unborn, you very quickly end up in an “no abortion except to save the life or health of the mother or prevent unnecessary suffering of a non-viable fetus”.

And this is exactly why most jurisdictions have limits on abortion.

In my country, elective abortions are only legally allowed up to 24 weeks of gestation and the doctors only perform it up to 22 weeks.

Above that, there needs to be a serious medical situation that falls in the exceptional categories.

Practically speaking, it’s mostly an ethics discussion. The vast majority of abortions take place within the first 12 weeks, most even within 8 weeks.
