  • He’s honestly one of the most savvy and intelligent statesmen I’ve ever seen. Maybe his understanding of humor lends to understanding how power dynamics work. He is extremely good at figuring out a message quickly that pivots him into a position where he is able to defend himself and his country while calling to and tying himself to greater powers.

He does this in a way where allies would lose face or have to take an aggressive stance if they reject Ukraine. And at this point taking an aggressive stance against Zelenskyy is making yourself a soft ally of Russia. That’s partly due to Zelenskyy’s constant pivots.

He runs a good gambit. I wish other world leaders were half as caring or savvy.

  • She’s a medic. I know many American veterans who had a similar gut reaction. Many of them volunteered for military service for a few months in Ukraine to fight against encroaching fascism.

Hell, I wanted to volunteer but I’m not trained as a soldier or a medic. If I was, I’d probably do a round there too. Many Medics aren’t much different in spirit than the veterans I know who served in Ukraine already. It’s not surprising that she felt this way and chose to do a tour.

If you are service minded, and can also see that the war in Ukraine is already a World War, then the choice is more obvious.

Sure, she has children, but she also has valuable medical skills. There are many doctors that volunteer in war zones who also have families. This has always been a call of duty for medics who have a heart like this.

Last time, Canadians declared war against Germany immediately after Hitler invaded Poland. Then, Canada actively discouraged sending troops and preferred sending arms and training. Now, we do not have a declaration of war, but we do have similar behavior of sending arms and training.

We also similarly have civilians volunteer to join the front before their countries officially do.

Do people forget that Canadians and Americans chose to fight the Nazis, as individuals, well before their country officially declared war?

Do we look back on those volunteers with negativity? No, we don’t.

So, why would I look negatively at a medic following in the footsteps of the Greatest Generation? I can’t. If I had her skills, I’d do the same.

  • Hard agree. I didn’t realize how awful this felt in practice and how much I genuinely missed conversations until Lemmy.

Every popular thread I got into the habit of ignoring the top comments because I’ve seen them 1000 before. Like being forced to watch the most unfunny 90’s sitcom.

I realize now that I would only comment on other comments— deep in comment chains.

Coming to Lemmy felt like the difference between trying to fish a pre-packaged snack out of a vending machine (Reddit) verses sitting down for a high quality all you can eat brunch (Lemmy).

  • Russia’s economy is a war time economy. Everything is transitioned over to war. Even if Russia got everything it demanded today, the war would not end. Why? Because Russia is not prepared and is not willing to dismantle their war-time economy and switch it back to a normal peace-time economy.

Russia is obviously untrustworthy as they break deals and promises all the time (which is how we are here, in war right now). But even if Russia was trustworthy, any peace accord that does not include a roadmap for Russia to renormalize their economy would be a temporary ceasefire at best.

Amazing how far a 3.6% GDP country can get with Assets, Sharp Power, and Chekist attitude alone.

Rubio is a jellyfish. What a coward.
