Today I Learned@lemmy.world•TIL that the term "Jaywalking" was invented in the 1920s by the auto industry to shift the blame for accidents from drivers to pedestriansEnglish

Wikipedia
While jaywalking is associated with pedestrians today, the earliest references to “jay” behavior in the street were about horse-drawn carriages and automobiles in 1905 Kansas: “jay drivers” who did not drive on the correct side of the street.[1] The term swiftly expanded to pedestrians, and by 1909, The Chanute Daily Tribune warned “The jay walker needs attention as well as the jay driver, and is about as big a nuisance.”

Losing an incredible privacy leak to own a 19 year old who posted his crimes on snapchat.

For Ente at least it looks like the best security is if every invitee has an ente account. Comments and likes are built in.

However Ente is focused exclusively on Photos, though they’ve made small branching outs into “will” storage & an authenticator.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Why are there many complains about AI power usage but almost none about the resources being wasted by the war/arms industry?
1·7 months agook. Where is this 10 million fine for mishandling waste from weapons manufacturing?

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Why are there many complains about AI power usage but almost none about the resources being wasted by the war/arms industry?
36·7 months agoI would argue the war industry probably has less regulations than other businesses.
Got proof? Because I’m pretty sure military contractors have to explain themselves to senators and congresspeople that got them the contract if toxic waste leaks out of a “secure” facility.
Datacenters on the other hand are corporations using their own money/investments to grab land, congress/senators didn’t ask them to.
Out of a bad situation you got probably the best outcome. Sorry.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Is Lemmy inherently more “social” and Mastodon more “individual” media?
5·7 months agoYou can use both for both lol.
Plenty of lemmy is people just yelling their takes, or pushing the links they want you to see.
Plenty of Mastodon is people filtering by the hashtags they care about and having long form conversations within those topics.
They both take a fire hose of federated data and sort it out for you in a similar fashion. One is just more horizontal and one is more vertical.

86·7 months agoBombs are carefully manufactured with waste products controlled, and products blowing up today’s enemies coming to kill your kids. The demands placed on a local population are moderate and can be adjusted to.
AI center sucks up water and electricity (making it expensive to local neighborhood), pollutes area surrounding it, very quick to setup so neighborhoods have no time to adjust, and product is only marketable to people who are tired of using their brain. To a local neighborhood, it’s a lot closer to “wtf are we getting out of this?”

Techdirt is a good independent site

The quote literally has a newspaper article from 1909 talking about jay walkers. Jaywalking may have been boosted by the auto industry but it wasn’t invented by them.
