Yeah, sometimes it got a little nasty about other people on reddit, which I was never a fan of. It was supposed to be in good fun, but sometimes people got carried away OR people would start posting every single question that was asked. (For example, I can poke fun at the people who just started riding a bike in their 20s and are now wondering about getting into a professional racing career, but sometimes people would repost what I thought were completely valid questions - no one knows everything, especially when they’re new to something. Fortunately those latter posts rarely got many upvotes or comments.)
Overall though it was generally a lot of fun. And honestly they were probably the most knowledgeable, helpful group if you had a detailed cycling question.
No, I didn’t, thanks for the tip. Subbed! I might drop the other one now.
I do miss /r/bicyclingcirclejerk. I loved the absurdly fake bragging and having fun with the stereotypes. Then one day we realized quite a few of us actually ride Cannondales, and that made it even funnier.
Dude just likes his clothes to sparkle, don’t shame him.
I can’t believe two people downvoted your comment.
You’re right about contributing.
As for the filtering, I’m not sure how I feel about that - I use the web interface on my computer and an app on my phone and tablet. I’d prefer them to have similar results. But I see the point you’re making; it could be curated by user instead of a massive algorithm for everyone.
I follow a sub that’s all reposts from reddit. Occasionally I think about replying to something, but then I just go, “What’s the point? OP isn’t here.” I don’t recall ever seeing anyone else respond to any of the crossposts, either. The community is c/bicycletouring@lemmit.online if anyone is curious, which is a pretty niche topic to start with.
I’m not convinced it’s adding anything to the Lemmy experience, but at least those are clearly marked as crossposts and are all posted by one account, so it’s easy enough to ignore if I wanted.
On the “all” thing - remember that reddit has a mode, which is the default, that’s between Lemmy’s “truly, everything all” and “subscribed”. In this mode, you’d get popular posts on subs that had opted in to allowing them to hit that page (or didn’t opt out, I don’t remember).
/r/hockey is a good example - their posts usually generally stayed in the sub, but their Super Bowl post (and occasionally others) would usually hit reddit’s front page and bring in a ton of people who weren’t subbed to /r/hockey.
This was a good feature of reddit, I hope Lemmy eventually gains something similar.
It’s possible I misunderstood your last goal, but if you’re planning to have Lemmy comments posted back to reddit, I suspect that wouldn’t go over well with reddit’s admins after they figure it out.
Of course it’s just my view, I don’t know what people are actually doing. But I’ve seen comments that I thought were good discussions of the topic at hand downvoted for describing the other side of an issue, even if the commenter doesn’t agree with it. To me the only reasons to downvote are things like trolls, off topic, personal attacks, racism, homophonic, and the like.
There’s definitely a “downvote if you disagree” ethos here. There’s not even a pretense of “this contributes to the conversation, even if I disagree” reason for upvoting.
I know this is how it worked in practice on reddit, but at least the rule was that you were supposed to upvote contributions and downvote things that didn’t contribute, and at least a few people followed that rule (or maybe only me).
I wouldn’t be surprised if that drives some people away - they see a bunch of downvotes on their comments and think people don’t want to hear from them (even if there are more upvotes than downvotes).
most normal cars
I hate to tell you this, but SUVs are “most normal cars” these days. There’s a reason Ford got out of making cars, except for the Mustang. (And I say this as someone that dislikes SUVs and would rather buy cars.)
The hell…I have a pickup with bedliner that we use (in part) for picking up pellets for our pellet stove by the ton. They put the pallet on as far as they can while it’s fully on the forks, then lift up the end of it and push the pallet on to the truck the rest of the way. No issues at all, and we’ve been doing it for several years now.
I throw all kinds of crap on it. A few years ago we were getting rid of fencing the previous owners had left…the only thing I had to worry about was them tangling enough that I wouldn’t be able to get another piece in (we have a cap on our truck). That’s the whole point in getting the bedliner. I’d refuse to help someone doing that.
Thanks. My wife has an iPhone, but I’m an Android person.
What interface do you use? I have two of our Fire TVs connected to home assistant and can sort of control them (play, start, pause) but is there a way to open different apps and select programs?
The FireTV is great - we added it to a circa 2008 LCD TV (of the dumb variety) we have hanging in the bedroom and got rid of the cable box. Now we just stream whatever we plan to watch. Works great!
I will note the person that originally told me about FireTVs now recommends the Roku stick instead. I haven’t tried those, though.
I have back issues - if I stand too long, my back really starts hurting. One of my favorite bands was playing in a standing room only place a few months ago, and I didn’t go because of it.
It’s not something that bothers me on a day-to-day basis, because I’m never really standing that long in normal situations. But for a few hours, on a concrete floor? That’s not going to go well.
I agree.
We have a 3/4 ton Ram 2500 with the diesel for the aforementioned towing and hauling, and there’s no question it’s a luxury vehicle. I recognize that. I also don’t daily drive it - it’s 9 years old and still has less than 60k miles on it and my plan is to keep it as close to forever as possible.
If we weren’t towing the trailer and hauling those pellets with it, an old beater half ton would still be a pretty handy vehicle to have around. I occasionally need lumber for various projects around the house; I have to run things to the dump sometimes; I sometimes need to get propane (which shouldn’t be carried in an enclosed vehicle for obvious reasons, though I did it many times before we had a pickup); sometimes I’m working on a car and need to carry a greasy or oily part; sometimes I move heavy arcade games; and so on.
Maybe a kei truck would work for those latter tasks, I don’t know…since they aren’t available here, the whole argument is kind of moot. If the manufacturers thought there was a reasonable market and profit for them, they’d be doing it. My understanding (which may be incorrect) is that the kei trucks do not meet US crash standards, and modifying them to meet that standard would kill the utility they have now.
And let’s face it, there are quite a few pickups around that have never hauled anything. But to claim they can’t haul anything is just bizarre.
Yeah, that’s an insane comment. I regularly tow an 8,500 lbs trailer with my pickup and regularly haul 2,000 lbs of pellets for our stove in it. Sometimes I tow the trailer with an additional 500 lbs of stuff in the bed of the pickup. I seriously doubt a kei truck - which aren’t even available here in the US - could handle either of those tasks.
I just spent a ridiculous number of hours replacing our dishwasher. This is a task that shouldn’t really take more than an hour or two, but there were complications caused by the previous owner of the house…plus I made the mistake of trying to fix our old dishwasher first.
If there are elves in that thing, I’d like to slap 'em around for putting me through that headache.
Four per week seems like it might be a lot for one cat.
Every cat is going to do it now and then - if nothing else, they get fur in their throats and have to cough that up.
But I had a cat that had food allergies and inflammatory bowel disease (that cat has passed away, but now we have another cat that also developed IBD…sigh). That cat did a lot of throwing up. We have three cats now, and I’m cleaning up fewer messes than he generated alone. I miss him a ton, but I don’t miss cleaning up the messes.
But, my suggestion is that you note what’s in the vomit - are you seeing fur? Undigested food? Digested food? Or just bile? And note the frequency. And then talk to your vet.
The smaller subs (such as for specific hobbies) do not have the same momentum here on Lemmy. That’s probably why.
