  • Hungary is the only independent country in Europe

This is the most laughable shit ever. Hungary is currently the one country in the EU where the government was cowed into not celebrating one of the biggest national remembrance days because it would have offended the Russians. There is a large Soviet monument in downtown Budapest that no one dares to touch.

Russian intelligence services have full access to Hungarian classified data. Russian agents operate with impunity and above the Hungarian law in Hungary. Hungary is trying but unable to get out of Chinese and Russian contracts since they are impossible to fulfil in the current political climate.

  • TSMC is just the end of a long supply chain of one-of-a-kind suppliers, all conveniently aligned with the West. TSMC does not make the lithography machines, the Dutch ASML is the only company that does (though they have some plants in the US now I think). Even so, ASML would be dead in the water without Swiss Zeiss optics.

The US’ strength was never autarky, but global trade. The reason the US economy is so resilient is because most US dollars are not in the US, but in reserves across the world. That means even the US currency is intertwined with global trade. If the US attempted autarky, it would collapse both the US and the world economy. That’s why Trump’s policies were beyond stupid by the way.

  • I think a lot of it is that we all have topics which we are knowledgeable about. Common discourse then takes different topics, and some people will contribute to the discussion who don’t understand the underlying stuff so much, they have different interests.

The problem is when you read a tech article as a tech worker, you laugh at how stupid the journalist and the commenters are. Then you read an article on some geopolitical event, or some natural phenomenon, and you take what is written as gospel, and even comment on it on forums, despite not having the same level of understanding as in your favourite topic. And you don’t feel you’re part of the stupid 90% then and there.

In my experience it is a very very loose collection of ideologies that share the common idea that there is no innate hierarchy between people and that helping others does not necessarily erode your own place in society.

Edit: Oh, it was an ELI5, then a leftist is someone who thinks other people in their sandbox does not make the sandbox worse.
