    This is very doable for anyone to make, as lemmy already has a websocket API. There’s also a chat mode, even in threads here, to make every comment flat, rather than shown in a tree, but of course this kind of UI still feels more long form than real chat apps made for that purpose. n

    something in this style would be really useful in the future, whenever the community grows larger

    it could be used in something like AMAs or live discussions about a certain topic

    The chat toggle pretty much acts like this. However the issue is that there are also multiple posts, and what you are describing is a 4Chan style imageboard, but instead there is only one thread on the board. Kinda weird when you think of it becoming like a YouTube live chat, where the witty spammers and trolls are kings.

      that’s not what i had in mind. we can have multiple threads within a group chat

        If your suggestion is on the lines of a 4Chan thread style imageboard, then we already have the chat toggle when we use web browser for Lemmy. Not a bad idea, it does give Lemmy a different character altogether, and it can create opportunities for both reddit and 4Chan style users.

    I am having trouble imagining how that would work with Lemmy architecture.

    Wouldn’t you want Matrix to be the protocol for a chat app?

    Also, wouldn’t this concept be better implemented as an alternative interface for Lemmur instead of a whole new app?

      I think that’s what she is saying essentially taking the data from Lemmy api and displaying it like a chat app

      ie.

      • communities -> group chat
      • Posts and comments -> threads within group chats
