As a user, what kind of protection do you expect? Who/What are you trying to protect against?
What implementation (client/server/something else?) allows you to do this? What would be missing?

Not exactly a security concern, but I absolutely loath vendor lock-in (even with open-source projects that use non-standard protocols and a commercial business model).
I don’t have anything top-secret, and my server is small. It’s a stock Prosody 0.12
Fiddling around with my client until OMEMO is happy is good enough for me in DMs. In public rooms, welp, they’re public.
