The irony: commemorating 30th years of protecting digital rights by hosting a new Fireside Chat on Twitch and YouTube Live: surveillance capitalist platforms that violate the rights and freedoms they supposedly fight for. Hypocrisy at its best! I won’t be attending any of their shitty events unless they switch to a digital-rights-respecting platform.
Some would argue this is a conflict between ideal activism and effective activism.
A) If not using twitch and youtube then they’d only appeal to enthusiasts and people who already have joined the case but on the other side it is not alienating to the hard core supporters or aggress on their digital neutrality.
B) If using youtube and twitch they can reach a grander audience as well as over time maybe make effective political change that obliterates youtube and twitch entirely and opens up a brighter future.
The point is, rather than promoting privacy-respecting alternatives by mirroring their streams and live chats to them, or at least allowing people to interact with speakers from privacy-respecting platforms; they choose to make Twitch and YouTube Live their exclusive live streaming platforms. People who really care about privacy and have a lot to contribute to the conversation, are barred from participating.
They don’t use Mastodon either, if you want to publicly interact with them, you must create a Twitter account. They want to fix Big Tech rather than push Small Tech and decentralized Internet. They also participated in actively harming the Free Software movement by publicly attacking RMS and his followers, even when it had literally nothing to do with achieving their mission. Afaik, they don’t even care about free software, they only care about trying to make Big Tech accountable for their wrongdoings, which is very different.
Why should they pander to you specifically? How many like you are there to engage, and how much of a resource would a person like you be? Are people like you what to focus on for effective change?
These are things you need to consider.
I don’t think it is asking to pander. Moreso that they are a digital rights group who should probably start boosting independent privacy respecting tech instead of just fighting big tech and government. They do important work of course. But that is one area where they could greatly help their own cause.
How about people who become aware of how privacy-abusing technology is, but decide not to switch to privacy-respecting platforms because not even the organization that enlightened them uses them? Wouldn’t it be better to give everyone opportunity to fight for their rights and stop using things that don’t respect them? The message they would transmit by hosting (or at least mirroring) their events on/to digital-rights-respecting platforms would be highly powerful.
I’m not trying to argue. It’s something to think about.
Me neither, I just wanted to express my opinion.
I understand. Hope you got stuff fully off your chest
