hey, i set up an instance for a german speaking community.
(everybody else is welcome as well)
i’d like to support the whole project and idea of a federated network.
the instance is set up for federation with lemmy.ml, so feel free to add it if you like : )
I’ll set up my instance to federate with you :)
hey, thanks, just added your instance too
Sehr cool von dir, danke!😃 English: very nice, thanks!
Wow looks great! @nutomic@lemmy.ml can u verify that it has a code of conduct.
No code of conduct, but the rules are identical to ours.
@nutomic@lemmy.ml is it correct that only after subscribing to a federated community any posts and comments get pulled?
Pulling only happens when you enter a post url, !comm@example.com etc into search. However you need to subscribe in order to receive new content in a community.
In my experience federation works perfectly on a technical level, but there is certainly a lack of documentation, and some rough edges in the ux. So please keep asking if anything is unclear, meanwhile I would appreciate suggestions how we can make all this easier to understand.

You could write technical documentation on what exactly happens, e.g. with a flowchart. You can show hints in the UI.
The thing is that I as a programmer have to understand very well how federation works. That makes it hard for me to tell which aspects may be complicated to understand for new users.
Your suggestions sound good, but I really dont know how they should be done in practice. If you could make a draft flow chart, or explain where those hints should be and what they should say, that would be very helpful.
Try to explain it like the new user is five years old?
How federation works in Lemmy
- federation means that if you write on one instance of lemmy, other instances can copy that content
- you can subscribe to communities from other instances
- before you subscribe, the content won’t be copied over
- if you want to copy over old content, search for it in the universal search bar™
- just copy the URL
This is way too complicated. As a new user, I’d expect that content of other instances would be available on mine, just like in Matrix.org, for example. Element.io and Mastodon explain federation well, maybe be inspired by their docs?
We’ll get back to you shortly to federate with you.
nice, thanks
Okay you’ve been added! Now just type in something like !libre_culture@lemmy.ml to the search bar to connect.
My instance is midwest.social. I’ll add yours to my list.
federation seems to work somewhat.
