I think we’re probably in agreement. What I was trying to say was that for all the (many) issues in the medical system, we have places in society where risk is studied and managed. We can do the same with AI, there just doesn’t seem to be any will on the part of the political class to actually tackle complex problems right now, and we really need that will to regulate because the free market sure as fuck isn’t going to regulate itself.

I want to gently push back on this. There are medications that can cause psychological symptoms and suicidal ideation as side effects and they’re still prescribed. They are, however, controlled, people who take them have to be informed of the side effects, and they’re managed by a trained physician. I absolutely think LLMs need to be more tightly regulated, and we need to have a much better idea of how they work and how to deploy them safely and in contexts where they are actually useful and won’t cause harm. But we do manage known risks with other products.

North America has a bunch of different types of receptacles as well, but they’re a little better regulated and configured so there’s not much chance of mixing them up. Lots of houses here have both 120V and 250V circuits, but the receptacles are normally completely different so there’s no risk of mixing them up, I think. Amperage, however, is a little more wild west from what I can tell - you have have anywhere from 15 to 60 amp circuits and, as far as I can tell, there’s no way to tell from the receptacle what you’re plugging into or the load it can take unless you check the breaker box (and have a house where the circuits make sense - older houses often have things like lights or receptacles wired into circuits that don’t really make sense for them). This is all in my very limited, very lay understanding so somebody who knows better will probably come along with better info.

ETA: The situation in Brazil sounds rough - generally from my experience in the us, if your plug fits in the receptacle, it’s probably fine. Worst case scenario (most of the time) is the overload a circuit and flip a breaker/blow a fuse, but there are lots of older houses that are definitely not up to current code.

I have zero problem with people criticizing this journalist. I do have a problem with users attacking one another or using misogynist language (it’s possible in that case there’s a cultural disconnect. I’m from the US, where “cunt” is a pretty serious gendered insult. I know it’s not considered as big of a deal in other english speaking places, but frankly I’ve been getting enough reports on this thread that I’m getting a bit sick of dealing with it in general)

Personally I’d also be good with funny articles or other types of writing about tech, god knows this sub could use some levity. I don’t think we would probably be okay with posting tech related memes, though. It’s possible that if the community was really interested we could do a weekly sticky for memes or other lower-effort content, though.

Not sure I understand this take. The game was a commercial product, Fromsoft made it to sell to people. That doesn’t preclude it from being art, and a film adaptation being made of it also doesn’t preclude that.

A24 has a pretty good reputation for taking risks, and they’re an independent production company. Seems like probably the best possible way something like an Elden Ring film could be made, IMO.

I’ve really enjoyed it, and it’s been a breath of fresh air for this friend group that was really struggling to find stuff to play together. We used to get deep into a lot of survival crafting type games, think Ark and Conan, but several of us had gotten pretty burned out on those, and most of the multiplayer stuff we were interested in either didn’t grab everybody or was limited to just a few players. Stuff like Helldivers being only 4 players meant that not all of us could play together, which felt bad. These multiworld games, though, mean that we can all get on a discord call and kick the runs off at the same time, and it feels like we’re playing together as we call out stuff we’re sending to each other or items we need, but then we can wrap the runs up over the course of the next week as we have time. Plus there are enough games that most folks have been able to find something that feels comfortable for them.

I’ve gotten sucked into the rabbit hole that is multiworld randomizers lately. I’ve done several smaller multiworlds with a group of friends (4-8 players) all playing different games, and a week or so ago got involved in a larger one (15 or so players) that was organized on a forum I frequent. All of these have been through Archipelago, and if you’re not familiar with multiworld randomizers their FAQ is a decent introduction. I’ve played a few different games in these - Minecraft, Wind Waker, and most recently Balatro, and all of them have been really interesting and fun ways to play games that I was already pretty familiar with. Also, my regular gaming group has had trouble finding multiplayer games that we all want to play recently, and these archipelago multiworlds make it so that we can play something together without all having to agree on what to play, plus you can play asynchronously so we can start together but then finish runs out as we have time. It’s been really cool and I’m jonesing for more.

I loved the first EtG and played a ton of it. I’m not entirely sold on the new 3d art style, but I’ll try to give it a fair shot once it gets here.

Also, the original Enter the Gungeon is available on Xbox Game Pass for any of you folks that have it. It’s absolutely worth checking out.

I’m on board with Eno here. There are issues with the current wave of generative AI, but the main reason they are such huge problems is the people who are pushing these technologies have zero concern for the potential social harms they could cause or exacerbate.
