Last time I checked diaspora* was still not a real part of the Fediverse and maybe never will be.
Of course you can choose to join d* anyway, but if you want to connect with the Fediverse choosing for Friendica (Or Hubzilla, though I found it not easy to use, with many options) which is kind of similar to d*, makes sense.
What I was trying to say is that, from what I have read, d* software since years makes no effort to connect to other Fediverse software. They are on their own island.

It’s still a part of the fediverse. Fediverse doesn’t have to be just activitypub.

It does not have to connect to anything else to be part of the fediverse. It is federated and FOSS. That is enough.
Disroot uses Hubzilla and I did find it hard to use.
