No one is buying their shitty cars. German auto industry around 2000-2005 decided to start engineering in obsolescence, pushing the business model of leases (renting) , then resales to people who take on the burden of ridiculous parts cost, then to the junkyard.
This included: motors with timing chains nearly impossible to replace, various plastic engine parts designed to fail after a set number of heat cycles. Turbo motors with failing head gaskets. Reliability far below Japanese competition. This European business mindset of fucking people over once was never sustainable. FIAT did the same thing.
Agreed… I had a Golf 2017 and loved it to death but the service at the dealership (all the ones I tried which I think where 3 total) was SO BAD, I basically gave up on the brand… which turned out to be a good thing because they have been in heavy decline since as you correctly point out
