what’s wrong with mastodon?

This seems to have some interesting ideas, but I am doubtful that the ultimate goal to have a “big-world-data” aggregated view into a Fediverse like “small-world-data” structure is even something desirable.

If they can pawn off the moderation/legal/eu privacy aspects onto self hosters but can own the underlying payment / membership system that influencers/celebs/companies use I think that’s a win. No understanding at all of tech, but if twitter updates with those two things, with managed hosting for their top tier that could be compelling reasons to stay with or move to the platform.
