The rise of inexpensive Chinese electric vehicles has upped the pressure on legacy automakers who have turned to suppliers, from battery materials makers to chipmakers, to squeeze out costs and develop affordable EVs quicker than previously planned.
A large battery pack replacement is $20k. To make a $20k ev you’d need the whole thing to come in at under $10k manufacturing costs which leaves another 6-8k in R&D, tooling, … per vehicle. Current battery prices are ~$100 per mile of range. Prices need to drop much further for economy EVs to be viable.
