For example it’s embarrassing how long I opposed feminism because I only read extreme scare stories about it, never realizing how much of what I took for granted in relationships between genders was a hard fought victory for feminism and all of us. Then when we had our first child, who were the only people standing up to say my company should have paternity leave? Feminists.

I have a more conservative brother who is very much against affirmative action. However he sees firsthand the results of blindly promoting people to meet diversity goals without regard to ability. Meanwhile I’ve been at companies who pay attention to both, resulting in a much more successful workplace

Effing US News had an article where they rated Florida as the best for college education. But looking at their criteria, it was because college there is cheap and easy to graduate from. It really seemed a poor choice of criteria and good only for starting online arguments.

I do wonder how widespread Astro-turfing is. I just came from a discussion of EVs and some of the anti people were really obtuse in their claims. Just making wild claims that are completely against any actual real life data. There was similar for climate change, and smoking …… sure I’m biased but people want to support the status quo against all reason. Is it some sort of stubborn stupidity? Are they malicious/trolls? Is it corporate propaganda?

Let’s go even further back. We had a lot of environmental activism in the 1970s. We got the clean air act, the clean water act, started recycling efforts for at least bottles and cans, and paper. Solar panels were a hot topic and President Carter installed some at the White House. My parents were part of a trend toward all electric houses fed by nuclear (what a disaster that was). Cars got a lot more efficient.

We had a great start. Then Carter lost his second term, and Republicans went ham on our future

I used to think I had a good understanding of “the other side” even if I disagreed, but they might as well be aliens now. I believe that’s way too true in the US, regardless of your affiliation

As a partial explanation, not an excuse, y’all have to remember this was the Cold War. A lot of this was accepted as a necessary evil to prevent the big EVIL. If you thought you had to choose between civilization ending WWIII, vs interfering in a third world conflict, the evil may not be as clear cut as y’all think. Kissinger drove the bus but we all went along.

Falling for however much of that was propaganda is all on us.

We also mostly fell for it in Iraq. If you take anything from this diplomat’s life work, DONT FALL FOR THE PROPAGANDA. it’s easy to see the evil with hindsight and in a different world, but we all need to develop the skepticism and questioning to see this for it is when it happens again.

I’m proud of my country but that includes seeing where we’ve failed and it’s all of our duty to see when it’s stepping off the ideal path and do our part to get it back on track

As someone who enjoys a good microbrew once in a while, or a smooth single malt, I would be affected by a higher alcohol tax but still think it’s a good idea. I like to think I’m responsibly enjoying my vice and I spend more on it to reach higher quality, but I still recognize it’s a vice. Realistically I’d grumble but not change my habits because I don’t use it very often
