Should I make a lemmy instance, but only for learning skills and at that a somewhat serious one?
I've thought about it, something about managing my time between having fun and doing work. If i did create an social environment with a set of rules that strictly focuses on developing skills, and, that is, it could be any skills as long as the community is focused. There is one offer I heard some time ago from the lemmy org itself giving out free hosting for instances. It might be a chance for me to do so, however there is many caveats. For one I'm pretty lazy and I don't sometimes feel like managing and moderating. But I think It's fine if I'm like that as the rules are pretty clear, (which I'll explain after). I probably have to choose whether I should federate or not, for one people from other instance could help others or maybe it'll attract spam and unwanted, unfocused comments and post from other users. Alright, to get the idea of what it would be like; for the description and rules: A lemmy instance for learning. 0. everything from lemmy.ml 1. You can only comment related to the topic, and if it'll be helpful 2. You can only post discussions, you may not aggregrate links. All resources can only be added in the community description. 3. If a person post Art or Writing or some other media, and if the person asked for criticism you may only respond of what is requested, if the person asks to recieve criticism privately, then do so. 4. if you want to give advice and you think it'll be helpful but the person did not ask, please send them a message privately with a re:/reference in the header. 5. You cannot make communities unrelated to learning. nots: 1. You cannot post anything unrelated to each corresponding community 2. You cannot post memes, or posting for jokes. as this is a focused space. Guidelines for starting a community: 1. Be concise in the description, and write down the rules needed to make a good learning environment. 2. Add learning resources for the community, you may discuss with them which is the best resources. 3. If you want to build a community but just started studying, you may discuss it with others to find helpful members and find resources. you can search for resources through https://learn-anything.xyz 4. You can have fun, put up events related to the study topic. it might just help people be motivated. ---

Ask yourself this first, what is your objective using these tools?; Do you want to socialize, or do you have some other objective? Or even do you think using this will help you or will it be a problem that may hinder you instead of helping you do the thing you want to do?

The dilemma you are asking for an answer is meaningless without the context of the question. Possibly one is best for one thing or the other. But I know for a fact if you tried both and understood what you want to do, you can decide it for yourself. After all it’s just a matter of personal preference and the usage case.

how about the lite version

you should try fedilab, but i never used friendica with it though

some different features, but well, it’s all pretty similar (all for microblogging). I hate managing different accounts so I just use one. just use what you like the most. you can follow everyone still.

I see, i hope they do do that. thought when the dino account said “…compatible with other XMPP applications…” other xmpp applications might support it as well.

group video calls in xmpp?
I heard in dino you could do that https://fosstodon.org/@dino/107787204408646020 I don't have anyone to test it, but I'm guessing it'll work as said. how about between apps like conversations, gajim and dino? on each app pages the features aren't clear whether it does these things. --- also, for security reasons i'm thinking of when xmpp will implement something like totp.

I’ve already quit trying to be invisible, I thought doing so would make my life easier but the opposite happened. I kept trying to find ways that are almost impossible to do. Things I want to do by nature is publicly involved.

So the IP just reveals general area of location, correct? Is there anything I want to worry about in my case?

I’m not trying to be anonymous or anything, I just hate not being in control of my own privacy from things snooping everything I do. e.g. using a windows computer, using whatsapp, google. etc. for communications.

Although one worry I have is my home address being public information.

is selfhosting public stuff like XMPP, Email, ActivityPub, on a homeserver good for privacy?
if I have communications with someone through the internet with a homeserver. I would inevitably give out my IP address. Is that a bad thing? In my country they don't have services like that, RTCing would be a bit sluggish using available euro servers.

THINGS CONSIDERED A SIN FOR A FEDIVANGELIST....
IN MY OPINION 1. WORDLE 2. CROSSPOSTING FROM TWITTER. 3. RETWEETS. 4. PROMOTING CENTRALIZED SERVICES. 5. USING CENTRALIZED PLATFORMS WITHOUT FEDIVANGALIZING. 6. GATEKEEPING. 7. POSTING CONTENT THAT IS CONSIDERED LANDFILL. 8. NOT GIVING MONEY (to fediverse projects and to instance owners) you can add to this list. just make stuff up my my brain is already fried.
