Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•In the US one can graduate *cum laude, magna cum laude, and summa cum laude*. There should be another honor added if you survive a school shooting.
4·4 months agoLook we have enough participation trophies, we don’t want to bog down the ceremonies with another 400 awards. Also some of these people will be limping, possibly in wheelchairs. And god forbid we have a shooting at the event and we didn’t bring enough medals.
I kinda feel like this is sarcasm but I’m not even sure any more. How did we get here?

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What's the biggest case of planned obsolescence you've dealt with?

A bit of a dry spell, huh?

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•I'm new to lemmy, came from reddit. What's the lemmy etiquette like? How different is it from reddiqutte?
65·4 months agoNot only can you say it, you can get temperate responses and arguments on the subject and not the person. Sure, we have to deal with some absolutists like on .mil, but after a few weeks of blocking the bad actors, this is a really refreshing environment.
Edit: and to OP on .ml, that wasn’t against you. Be sure to search around for areas that interest you, it can be sparse but there are some real gems here.

If Lemmy could up its porn game, reddit would just be bots saying catchy things to each other.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What's an example of something that usually goes unnoticed when done well but very noticeable when done poorly or not done at all?
1·6 months agoSince 9/11 they’re generally locked off from the public in the US. I attended some mass casualty and terrorism training and we talked with someone who ran their city water and sewer. He had a neat plan to radiate the city water system he helped them defend against.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•How does the Chinese government even work
51·7 months agoImagine China as a company. There is a board of directors, and Xi is the head of that board. The board runs a lot of lower ranking boards that control all the aspects of government operation.
Have a problem with your plumbing? Go to your local province or city board. A whole region experiencing drought? The regional board has an action plan that they impose on the local boards to implement with government regional help. Xi is responsible for steering the overarching policy of China moving forward as a country. His role is to say “make China control the South China Sea and receive deference from those countries” to the military, and then it’s their problem to figure out how to harass shipping.
You get promoted to higher boards for good work, and the board votes for its leader. Read Xi’s promotion history. I would die after that many years of office politics, myself.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•how do school shooters know how to use guns?
1·7 months agoGlad to hear you doing this. My daughter refuses to learn, but I keep telling her it’s so when the dumb boy pulls out a gun at a party, she can ask to see it, and clear the chamber, take the clip, safe it, and hand it (minus the clip) back.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What do you think about the concept of lesser evil? (i.e. when faced with selecting from two immoral options, the less immoral one should be chosen.)
01·7 months agoInaction that causes a harm is an action. Say for example you’re a muslim that doesn’t vote for a female candidate because you feel she doesn’t do enough to help your people. If the other candidate actively allows great harm to your people, you failing to vote for the female candidate is helping empower the harm on your people.
I just hope we never see this example in real life.

There’s something important to understand about LLMs. You need to imagine them as a crowd of 1,000 people, who you use an algorithm on, to get close to the most popular opinion on the answer.
