  • You’re asking about something called surveying, if you want a term to search for. Modern surveying equipment uses lasers to measure the land, then they do a bunch of trig to create an accurate map. Once you have an accurate map that’s keyed to known reference points, you can design the roundabout. When you’re ready to build it, it’s just following the map and using the reference points to measure it back out.

Nah, I ran into it going on thyroid hormones too. My parents had a couple church friends that were absolutely adamant that I needed to take the ‘natural’ desiccated pig thyroid instead of the ‘unnatural’ synthetic thyroid hormones. Their faith said that their god doesn’t make mistakes, that either he wants you to have this condition, or he’s provided a perfect natural remedy, so synthetic medicines existing is hubris.

It’s more common with mental health meds, but it’s not like there’s a law saying it’s the only meds people can be shitty about.

  • I think I’m the reason my high school installed security cameras.

So, we had mandatory parenting classes in lieu of sex ed, but the school didn’t have the money for those rubber babies and just made us carry around hardboiled eggs for a week. I still don’t understand that logic, but hey that’s conservative america for you.

This went, predictably, very poorly. Lots of ‘babies’ got stolen, smashed, and/or thrown out of windows, and this one guy in particular kept being weirdly pervy about it. Being conservative america, the teachers did not care that he was harassing girls about their eggs.

This guy wanted a girl’s egg so damn bad, I watched him put the combo into his locker, peeled my name sticker off the week old egg, and left it in his locker over the weekend.

The next week, there were cameras in the hallways.

  • Okay, so as a teenager I was a super nerd and got into swords. I took olympic style fencing lessons first, then got into the ren faire and also did some stage combat. Sadly, I have health problems and I couldn’t keep my knees in place, and had to quit. The difference between those is probably the same difference between WWE style wrestling, and BJJ. One is done with choreography, one is a competition.

They’re both sports. I don’t understand why people think the choreography somehow means it doesn’t have skills or rules? It was the same skillset, different rules. Stage combat was unpadded and used heavier weapons that left more bruises when we fucked up the choreography. They’re different, sure, but the amount of overlap is underappreciated.
