I’m not sure what specifically is meant by phonics. My grandma taught first grade for 30 years, ending around 2000. She said when phonics came in “that’s just teaching reading” and when phonics went out “well, obviously we still have to teach how the alphabet works” and when phonics came in again “eye roll”. So, whatever the school leadership says, my guess is kids are learning phonics.

Remember that the stories you hear are always going to be the ones that are most controversial, otherwise they would not be news. The day in day out work of the FDA is enormous and most of it, I believe, necessary for the level of trust in what you find on the shelf, what you’re doctor recommends, what your pharmacist hands you, that we enjoy.

I don’t want to have to know my farmer, my chemical compounder, my importer, my distributor, my restaurant chef, etc, etc, for every stupid thing just to avoid eating lead or feeding hepatitis to my kids.

The loudest complaints-- selling raw milk is technically illegal? they allow red food coloring as long as you list it in the ingredients? they may or may not allow you to call oat liquid a “milk”?-- sound pretty small to me, and also even these issues are reviewed and discussed more or less transparently in response to people’s concerns.

Set “office hours” and stick to them. She can make a list of things to do. Maybe it needs to be 20 min every evening, or maybe just once or twice a week. My partner has a similar (but more minor) problem, and this has worked both increasing self-help and making the time spent more enjoyable. Though I’m sure it helps that the needy person doesn’t live with us. Good luck

I think it’s pretty clear extreme fatness (and the resulting dependence) was either intentional to keep everyone basically sedated for 700 years, or the natural side effect of that sedation.

In a practical sense, I can tell you that in mobile apps, some parts of gdpr are implemented based on phone language settings or in the case of websites, the domain suffix of the page (.fr or .de, etc). I’m guessing this is an interpretation of the section described here:

Most people seem to be leaning toward just applying them to anyone as that’s the way things are headed and once you’ve figure out how to do it technically it’s easier to just do it all the same way. Also, the EU is doing it’s best to set precedent for a broad interpretation.

Maybe if the price per apple goes up, the grocer takes the money. He can’t sell more apples because there aren’t any right now and anyway there’s still the same number of stomachs, so he puts it in the bank. The bank lends it out at too high interest for the farmer to borrow to plant trees on the off chance he can convince the grocer to stock more apples five years from now.

I think choosing a large popular instance to store your account info, posts and comment history makes sense. Also, not having great info about how your credentials are handled on all of these different instances makes people tend to congregate under the idea that more users means better outcome for any grievances. Seems safer. What am I missing?

Gaslamp district in San Diego had a cafeteria like this years ago, guessing it’s no longer a thing, but simple cheap menu would have steady customers, maybe profitable, it’s the business development people who would oppose.

I love this and have had similar thoughts in relation to my non verbal kid wanting to keep memories in a way they can point out different parts and link together multiple things to make new stories or comments or hypotheticals. Important to have the context and the parts and named things all relating together. I don’t know much about it, but there is a thing called “sidecar” file that can be associated with media. There are some moves to make EXIF data more standardized. So there’s a chance this could be done in an open format.
