Hello everyone. I’ve decided to write this post about Techlore and The Hated One because I’m confused. So there was the big GrapheneOS drama there with Techlore and stuff… Under the video many people commented that Techlore is just influencing fans and etc. The Hated One recently made a video of Signal. He said, that Signal server did not get a source code update since 2020. He was wrong. It did, this year February. I’m getting really confused about if they lie to all of us on privacy, and if this is a real concern. I want to hear your opinion on this!

I’m gonna preface this comment by writing that I don’t know those two peoples and only checked the hated one channel and watched one of his video on apple. Feel free to correct me.

    The key word is agenda.

To understand such behaviour it helps to identify those people motives. In my opinion, - maybe misguided - they are akin to any other influencers. They promote privacy and an associated ‘hacker’ lifestyle like one would promote vegan, fitness, makeup, etc.

The hated one shit on big tech but he also monetize his content, had a patreon and ask for donation. I don’t see any peertube, mastodon or lemmy presence.

He does not provide those video out of goodness of his heart but has monetary incentives behind him, he has a brand, follower, etc. This is not necessarily a bad thing. However it need to be taken into account when trying to understand some decision, and a big one is why they focus on some stuff and not others.

From my limited expertise - I’m a human and I use the internet - fear mongering and drama are two important mechanism in the influencer tool-set. And using them help improve their brand so why wouldn’t they?

Thanks for listening to my ted talk.

Excuse me, what? The Hated One has a brand like presence? He has got a subreddit about as big as my privatelife, and it took him ages.

If you really believe he is the iJustine or the MKkBHD of the privacy world, you could not be more wrong. Apple is the iJustine of privacy world. The Hated One is more like the MrMobile or Jaime Rivera/PocketNow of privacy world.

Your take is a piping hot cup of tea with lots of salt in it.

I don’t know your references, sorry.

I don’t mean he is as ubiquitous as nestle but that he is an internet persona. This persona entails keeping 300k subscriber entertained because they provide him some cash flow. That’s all.

That is false. He provides valuable info enough and challenges the Apple crowd and helps transition people into the privacy world better than most of the folks. That is enough I would say.

dude, you expressed the same exact idea in another post.

You think the funding and affiliations of organizations have nothing to do with the agenda they propagate? Oh summer child.

When you say techlore was “influencing fans” thats just an opinion not a fact so imo I dont think that was the case.He just talked about the whole drama and a little bit of what he thought about it.I dont think that his intentions were to “manipulate and influence” his fans.Dont believe everything that ppl say’

imo I dont see them this way.You just discovered them and because of that you cant really decide completely about who they are just from 1 video.Of course the hated one would ask for donations and such.Since im pretty sure he relies on such stuff to mantain himself. Also just because hes a privacy advocate doesnt mean he needs to use lemmy, mastodon and such. Its just like techlore who has discord and such stuff so that he can spread privacy to ppl who are stuck on those services ,so that one day they randomly run into his content and learn about privacy.I also disagree on the part of “he does not provide those videos out of goodness of his heart” I mean he is not forcing you to do such stuff and just because someone tries to make money from something doesnt mean that thats their only motive to make such content.

Maybe I was to harsh in my choice of word. English is not my main language.

What I wanted to convey is that you need to take the context of production into account.

They guy is living from his video and has to make strategic decision in order to continue to do that.

For the alternate plateform you’re right, they have to go where the public is.

Also to add more onto the “he does not provide those videos out of goodness of his heart” argument, he made a video about Newpipe. He even talked about how he didnt care if you moved since of course he wouldnt be able to get likes or ad revenue because of ppl using things like newpipe and how he just wanted people to use these products to get away from using the youtube app or website.

Even newpipe isn’t the right choice it’s cool to acess youtube but, Youtube only exist for make money out of you, free labor for someone finacial gains is called #DigtalSlavery and Youtube isn’t recommendable they only did it because Youtube was of Chad Hurley, Steve Chen, and Jawed Karim— created the service in February 2005. Google bought the site in November 2006 for US$1.65 billion; YouTube now operates as one of Google’s subsidiaries

G00gl€ bought it only with financial interest nothing more
