This is fantastic news for a million reasons and couldn’t come with better timing.
Facebook have shifted much of their focus to “groups”, as facebook itself is bleeding user activity to instagram, and groups have been their ‘saving grace’ to keep users on-platform.
Groups itself is really just a poor imitation of reddit (which itself has become a poor imitation of traditional forums), where the focus is not on delivering a communication resource for communities but rather as a eyeball medium for scroll ads (which used to be the role of facebook flow).
In addition, lately, facebook has been cracking down on hobby groups in all areas (aquarium/fish hobbyists, poultry breeders, etc) - as the sale/trade of live animals is banned, and groups are getting closed down.
So right this moment, a lot of users in this category are looking for new spaces to participate and maintain communication with their communities, many have already started to migrate to Discord (which frankly, sucks for this purpose even more so than facebook).
If there was an app available on iOS/Android, with pixelfed groups there is a chance to become competitive with both facebook and instagram, if we give it enough legwork now that people are looking for an alternative after closure of pet groups! The more that move, the more momentum, the more ‘meta’ will end up dead. win win, and win!
Basically a perfect mix between Facebook and Instagram. I need this.
It is really cool. And needed.

I am wondering if friendica needs a gui update, since it has groups since ages. But I do prefer pixelfed over friendica.
I use pixelfed and I think it’s a fantastic project. But it desperately needs a mobile app. The mobile website if you can call it that is just not functional.
Pixeldroid is an unofficial android app https://pixeldroid.org/. There is also an official app in development, I remember Dan, the pixelfed dev sharing screenshots of the app.
Yup Dan is working on a official app!
It seems that you can install it fram the browser as an progressive web app,if that helps.
