I had been talking with my wife about long term organizational plans… The bookshelves in the library are 30 year old, bending, crappy plywood that need to be replaced, and my plan was:
-
Clean out the back bedroom.
-
Get new bookshelves for the library that are taller, wider, and will add over 200 linear inches of shelf space.
Current library:

-
Figure out how many of the old bookshelves can be moved into the back bedroom (four! four bookshelves! Ah ha ha! Maybe 5 if I get super lucky.)
-
Put the empties in the back bedroom for more DVD storage, then fix the wall they sit in front of because I hate that wall treatment (long story).
Ugly ass-wall:

(It was like that when we bought the house, loved the house, HATED that wall. I need to pull down the plywood slats and re-paint to get rid their janky ass-wainscoting.)
- Put together the new racks and re-assemble the library.
All told, a lot of work. My plan was to do all this a little at a time over a period of months.
WELL… Our kid asked my wife what he should get for Christmas.
Turns out… 5 new bookshelves show up TOMORROW.
I can’t be mad… it’s a gift. But holy hell… I wasn’t ready to start the project TOMORROW.
Sits down at organ and forgets what I was supposed to be doing.
Do do do do do do do do dodo!
Now this, this is mildly. Because it’s also awesome.
Merry Christmas, and go pick out the paints for the wall.
I need to figure out what to do with the top of the wall that sticks up above the bookshelves, lots of options, but my wife has veto power. 😉
Left to my own devices? TARDIS wall. LOL.

Others:

Why are none of your options more bookshelves?
There’s an 10" gap between the bookshelves and the ceiling I’m trying to do something with. 😉
Display case? Add more wood to the bookshelf and maybe a plexiglass or polycarbonate clear door to keep out dust, some soft led lighting, and show off neat stuff up there.
That’s not a bad idea. I’ll need to measure the space once the shelves go up to get a better idea. Thanks!
Wow. Great choices! Would the TARDIS wall also include LED lighting behind each circle? Because as much of a pain in the ass as that would it, it’d also be like bow ties.
I dunno if they’re transparent enough for that, would be worth looking into.
I was thinking around the outer edge of whatever separates the circle from the wall, so the illumination comes from behind.
Edit: on a second look, I might’ve been mistaken.
Yeah, the pattern makes it intentionally hard to tell. It’s a vacuum formed plastic square with 4 circles.
What?!? You didn’t even get time to research which new bookshelves to get!
In fairness, they are a set that I linked my wife to as a “yeah, something like this…”
Bookshelves are one of those things that can be like $80 each up to “How much would you like to spend?” These are reasonable.
Oh! The joys of christmas?
No joke! Glad I have some time off!
