The original Echo is running on a 2.6.x series Linux kernel, which even for a device released in 2014, is painfully outdated.
Well, apparently 2.6.32 was supported until 2016, but that was because Debian and Ubuntu used that particular version in LTS releases.
The first 3.x version was already released in 2011, so yeah, they probably used 3 year old hardware.
