Just learned some wonderful news: Owncast, an open-source self-hosted live video and web chat server, is coming to the Fediverse via a NLnet NGIZero grant 🎉
Some of the ways they’ll federate:
-
Follow owncast instances and receive notifications.
-
Interop with #peertube so content shows in the UI, maybe searchable too.
-
Build highly customizable directories and communities around owncast instances.
Read more about it on Gabe Kangas blog in An Exciting Update about Owncast.
So I very happily added Owncast to the Activitypub Application Watchlist this morning 😃
Owncast would be a perfect compliment to platforms like Peertube.
I think it’s closest to services like twitch, nonolive, facebook live than peertube (youtube alternative).
Does Peertube’s livstreaming not compare? I tried finding a Peertube stream once but no one was live so no idea how good it is.
I tried streaming to a couple of friends and it was nice. A bit of delay and no chat, but worked well.
Oh I had no idea Peertube was missing chat. That’s a bummer.
PeerTube has had a very nice chat plug-in for some time now.
