The only way the current strategy of both sides changes is if a major factor changes, otherwise this cold standoff is the most stable place for both sides on the matter.

It could be that an election in Taiwan is won by a very pro-China party - a similar thing led to rapid changes in Hong Kong. Or an American leader changes tactics dramatically because theres no longer an incentive to support Taiwan.

Taiwan needs to be careful to guard against either situation happening.

Differing from many superpowers that came before the US, the US has a reputation of following through on what it says it will do long term, and the vast geopolitical diplomatic reach of the Americans means that for now, China would experience too high an economic cost to try and change this balance unilaterally.

Fortunately VPN tech is very flexible, so there are ways to get yourself a dedicated IP that nobody else can use, solving the problem and defeating those IT guys.

Yes, that may be the answer. But blocks of IPV6 can still be limited by entire subnets if security/cloud host/IT guys keep turning to this method of reducing their exposure to bad actors.

It totally had its time and place, but it’s trivial to get “fresh IPs” from 4G VPN and proxy services that specialize at this (for a price), so as a security concept it’s only viable if your attacker’s budget is under $20.

Been with Mullvad a long time and it has been an excellent service.

As they have grown, their IP pools are no longer as fresh and I get Google captcha’d on hardmode, or cloudflare blocked, or other account limitations when using the service that didn’t used to be there all the time now.

I wish the VPN community had a way to solve for this.

It’s more like the mosquito that just won’t stop buzzing in your ear even though you are traipsing in his forest. Except this mosquito flies with 2m of his closest brothers and sisters and your response is to burn his forest down.

I don’t know what I’m trying to say. Hamas has annoyed Israel one too many times and now is getting an angry, irrational response with tons of collateral damage. Not a calculated response.

Perhaps the only thing I can offer is that the response from Israel isn’t all that irrational. Every person can be driven to the point of breaking and lashing out.

Israel has obviously completely had it with Hamas and would rather bear the international consequences of wiping Gaza off the map instead of facing one more rocket across that border. Honestly that is a pretty fucking huge miscalculation for Hamas. Because Israel is a much better international diplomat and the winner gets to write the history book.

When you have two kids on the school yard that are lashing out, the principal comes along and makes sure neither crosses the others path again. That may be how this ends, but I fear the world doesn’t care enough about either side to get involved that way.

I remember using Trillian to overcome the MSN/AIM/ICQ boondoggle and it didn’t take long until all of those hosts started to fight back by complicating their protocols making it hard for the Trillian devs to emulate authentic clients.

The truth is that Youtube doesn’t want creators to own their identities because Youtube wants to own the viewers and tell them to watch whatever will make Youtube more money. Kind of the same as why reddit believes it has a moral authority to take over and control a subreddit that was built by a moderator.

Youtube wants viewers to be “Youtubers” not “Mark Rober viewers” or whatever. Otherwise Youtube becomes some kind of free hosting service. But they CAN help new creators get discovered by vast quantities of viewers if they so choose, which they offer hypothetically in return for a piece of the ad revenue which they can secure when the viewers are kept as Youtubers.

Youtube will work hard to break any 3rd party front end such as this one for sure.

Anyways, I hope GrayJay can attract a good following before the platforms figure out how to block them.

The first team or company who figures out how to let content creators own their identities completely - ActivityPub style on their own instances - combined with someone who figures out a compensation/revenue system and a way to drive viewers will probably be the Youtube/Twitch killer.
