They’ll do everything but hold social media companies to account for their editorial decisions (ie recommendation algorithms). All this would be very easily solved by banning algorithmic recommendations or at least mandating pluggable algorithms with a sane default that doesn’t prioritise rage bait over everything else.

What happens is they do defer to the expert. The expert is a plant by which ever lobbiest chose to sponsor the bill. I’m had correspondences with my government about fields I am intimately familiar with and their arguments about technical feasibility were given to them by their Big4 “expert”. The problem is I know the field well enough to understand their expert is simply giving the opinion they were paid to give and the technical feasibility of the proposals take a back seat to the political desire of the people pushing the proposal.

This is a bit of a cop out though. At the moment a very small number of humans do a very large amount of the harm because there is no cost to doing so.

They do so because of perverse incentives. They socialize the costs and privatize the gains. This is a fundamental design flaw of Capitalism and in turn Corporations.

Individual action won’t fix systemic issues like major polluters being almost exclusively from industry but that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t take the suggested actions in any case. Just don’t fool yourself that it is enough.
