If you take the Steam Deck as an example, they wanted to create a platform that they can control. It wouldn’t have made sense for them to go to Microsoft for this and then pay licensing fees for the operating system driving their platform. Windows isn’t just inconvenient for companies, but it also has a long-running habit of angering developers and consumers.
