I been using organic maps and OSMand. Both are great but organic has a more simple interface and has a much better search.

Looking at an area around my home, it shows truly wonderful places and interesting routes I did not know about. I will have to take my bicycle to explore those a bit someday soon.

I’ve read about this recently on hackernews, many people liked it. Is this a brand new project, I had never heard of it…?

I think it is, I’ve been trying it for the last week and it’s actually nice. And it also motivated me to actually contribute more to OSM by adding business infos (phone #, business hours, website, etc) on the places where I live.

I’m late to this party I know, but…

One thing I miss very much from a different system some years ago, is to be able to specify what type of route you’d like to take. Sometimes you just need to get from A to B, sure, but sometimes, maybe especially when walking or biking, you’d like to avoid some things (e.g. traffic) or to use a route with particular features (flattest, most scenic, etc.).

It fails to determine my location for some reason, after I give access. Is that expected at this stage? I can’t wait to stop using google maps.

Yes, with microg. Now that you mention it, OSMAnd has the same problem, perhaps organic maps and osm use a different api from gmaps.
