I’m a genX dude, living in a genZ world. I love everyone. Be gay, be trans, be whatever. I love everyone until an individual proves they don’t deserve it. I don’t hate anyone based on groups, I hate people who are assholes.

Technology@lemmy.world•A web page that shows you everything the browser told it without askingEnglish
162·4 days agoIt got my location wrong. It got my GPU wrong. It said I never left the tab, even though I left it to start this comment. It said I moved my cursor 111 times in 74 seconds, which is absolutely false.
That site is just pointless. Pretty much the only things it got right were my time zone and my browser.

Technology@lemmy.world•More Than Half of Gen Z Users Cancel and Renew Streaming Services for a Single Title, Won’t Purchase Full-Price Video Games, New Study FindsEnglish
2·4 days agoGenX here, I have a streaming service (Paramount+) for exactly one reason: It comes for free with my Walmart+ account, which I use frequently. Every 6 months I switch between that and Peacock, since both are free and I can change my choice twice a year. So I watch what I want on Paramount+ for 6 months, then switch to Peacock for 6 months, rinse and repeat.
As far as a lifetime subscription to Nebula, I’ve watched way too many sites fail/die to consider a lifetime subscription to anything on the internet. They could shut the site down tomorrow, and now I’m out $500 ($300 if I happen to get a discount from a creator code).

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Explain Stalking to me. I have ex gf's I run into different times at the same stores. Some I keep running into store after store. Just coincidence. At what point is it stalking or something?English
11·5 days agoPeople generally date people who live somewhat close to them (I know, LDRs exist).
People generally shop in stores that are somewhat close to them.
I’m smelling coincidence.
I like to grocery shop on Tuesday mornings, since that’s double coupon day at my local grocer. I give my neighbor a ride to the store, so we can use her 5% senior discount and save even more money.
I see the same people at the store every week, because they shop on the same day I do, at the same time I do. We smile and wave, sometimes we chit chat about current events, or small talk like “Man, the weather’s crazy this week”, or “How did your son’s baseball game go?”.
I am not stalking them, they are not stalking me. We just patronize the the same store at the same time as each other.
If you think you’re being stalked, randomly change up your routine. Let’s say you normally go shopping on Saturday afternoons. Go on a Thursday morning. If you still keep running into them, maybe you’re onto something. If not, enjoy your new ex-gf free shopping experience.
Not a huge one, but I’ve got a small tribe. My wife and I have a girlfriend, and regardless of which woman is the birth mom, all our kids have 3 parents. My oldest son and his kids also live with me, so we can help out with his kids, and he can help out with ours. My MiL lives in an apartment above my garage, so she’s always around to help out. My SiL lives a few miles down the road from us, so ditto for her. My best friend will drop pretty much anything she has going on to help out if all else fails.
It definitely makes parenting better, and a lot easier. As far as what keeps us together, a mutual love and respect.

9·7 days agoThe only time I ever touch cash is when I buy weed, since the dispensary isn’t allowed to accept card payments. They have an ATM inside though, so I take the cash out of the ATM, and bring it to the counter. It spends maybe 2 minutes in my possession.

Mildly Infuriating@lemmy.world•Reddit is finally entirely dead to meEnglish
1512·8 days agoI was on reddit every day for damn near 20 years, and if I’m being 100% honest, the fediverse is 10,000% better. The only problem is that not enough people interact. I’ve never seen a post with more than like 200 comments. It feels a bit empty here. But, on the other hand, 200 decent comments is better than 2000 shitty ones.
Once this place gets a few more users, it’s gonna be the GOAT.

1·10 days agoAmericans have no more third places
I have never understood this claim. Do parks and libraries not exist where you live? I live in a pretty rural area, but I can drive to the closest town and hang out in the Public Square all day, and there are always a couple dozen people there as long as the weather is nice. They even host a farmer’s market every Thursday from June to November, and they have an arts and music festival once a month from June to September.
The casino hosts free outdoor concerts in their parking lot every Thursday night from May to September. I’m going to see a Lady Gaga cover band on the 7th, an ABBA cover band on the 21st, and a few others over the course of the summer.
I can hang out in the bookstore for hours without anyone getting mad. They’ve got a nice little cafe if I want an espresso or a yummy pastry, but it’s not required. They also have nice clean bathrooms, which is always a plus.
I could hang out at the mall, but that’s more of a teenager/retiree spot, and I’m not in either of those demographics. My 17 year old granddaughter goes there with her friends a couple times a week though.
I can also go to either one of the two art galleries in town. They showcase local artists, and I’ve seen some amazing artwork there. They occasionally host slam poetry nights, and those are always fun. I’ve made quite a few friends there.
The Public Square I mentioned is also where we had our “No Kings” protest, and it was honestly a blast. Food trucks pretty much surrounded the Square. I must have eaten 6000 calories that day, and at least 2000 of it was delicious lamb kabsa cooked up by the refugees we welcomed into our community a decade ago.
If you’re into nature, we’ve got a shit ton of hiking trails, like, you could hike a new (to you) trail every weekend for a couple years and not run out of trails. I like to go rock climbing, and there are a lot of rocks to climb out here. We’ve got a ton of cricks and lakes to swim in. You can go set up a tent in the woods, and camp for up to 7 days before the State Troopers ask you to move. And even then, you can just move a mile in any direction and you’re good for another week.
And that’s just things that are 100% free of charge. I can drop a few bucks and hang out in a pub, a cafe, the shisha bar, or a comedy club.
I know this one is not a solution for everyone, but I can also hang out at my local Polish American Citizen’s club. We have all sorts of fun events, and they’re all technically free as long as you pay your membership dues ($10/year). We had a pierogi eating contest last week, with a $500 prize. I didn’t win, but I had a great time eating 34 pierogi and it cost me nothing but my membership fee, which I happily pay every year. On regular days, when we’re not having an event, we play dominoes, checkers, cribbage, pinochle, and sometimes chess, but that’s not very popular because no one can beat Piotr, and he ends up basically “owning” the chess board if he’s there, since the winner doesn’t have to leave the table. Spending time with people from my own cultural background is very enjoyable, I always leave happy.
Another solution that is not gonna work for everyone: Getting involved in Church activities. My church has a men’s support group that I am heavily active in (They also have a women’s support group that my wife attends.). We go camping, we go fishing, we have a flag football league, an amateur baseball tournament, we play pool, ping-pong, air hockey, darts, and we host free community BBQs in the summer.
Sorry for the novel, but I am an American, and I have more “third places” than I can even make use of. When I lived in a more urban area, I had even more options. I’ve never lived in the suburbs, only urban (for the first 20 years of my life) and rural (for the past 31 years) areas. Is this specifically a suburban problem?
