Every day, people who download and share pirated content receive DMCA notices via their ISPs, warning them to cease and desist their infringing behavior. While the majority of these notices are accurate, one Ubuntu user says he has just been targeted by an anti-piracy company alleging that by torrenting an OS ISO released by Ubuntu itself, he breached copyright law.

    Its kinda sad how what should be a massive privacy violation ( private companies monitoring IP addresses, and asking their ISPs to threaten those people on their behalf ) is codified into law in the first place.

      But you aren’t supposed to need it for legal torrents like actual Linux iso’s. That’s why this DMCA is a total meme.

      Yep, never browse without a VPN unless absolutely necessary for some very specific task. But also… this torrent was 100% legal
