gcc will get installed as part of the build-essential package that @ksynwa@lemmy.ml listed. And gcc should get called automatically by the make-command.
So, you actually don’t have to do a manual step to put gcc somewhere.
I tried doing make it gives me an error. Also (if you have downloaded the file checked it out), if I do “sudo make install” even with the GCC compiler installed, it still does not work.

why don’t you show or tell what this error is? people cannot telepathically know what is going wrong there.

this looks like a completely different driver than the one you posted in your top comment. In which folder did you run this?

Are you sure your adapter does not work out of the box? Ubuntu seems to have the driver for it already at:
/usr/lib/firmware/mt7601u.binMaybe you can try
sudo modprobe mt7601uand see if that makes it work.That’s the firmware, not the driver.
The driver seems to be the Ralink rt2870sta.
Even Debian, which is fairly restrictive, has a way easier process to load the firmware with the Kernel driver: https://wiki.debian.org/rt2870sta
