I haven’t used Diaspora yet. I have heard people say that its not really good and Friendica is better, which I also have never tried. Whats your experience with these platforms?
Friendica had a major backend rewrite which made it ActivityPub native and thus fully compatible with most of the fediverse. Diaspora on the other had is incompatible and thus as a result IMHO slowly becoming irrelevant.
But why only those two options, there are loads more interesting and probably better developed fediverse software. Check out https://fediverse.party
Hmm… I did not know that. I though Diaspora supported the activity pub protocol natively. I did check the fediverse party website. Really cool!. Thanks

None of my friends use these platforms. They like to use Insta, FB, etc. A lot of people here said friendica is better, so I will give it a try.
I think Friendica is friendlier
Haha… nice! I will try friendica. Thanks for the reply
Thanks for replying. I am more attracted towards Friendica, so I will give it a try
I like the idea of Diaspora, especially as a different platform from Mastodon (I really hate the whole fediverse = activitypub thing) and as something designed to be more of an alternative to Facebook. I have periodically used it off and on over the years. However, it just seems like there’s nobody there. This is why I no longer use it.
You don’t like the fediverse?
That’s not what I said. I dislike this idea that is emerging that the fediverse = activitypub. Anything that is FOSS and federated is part of the Fediverse. Just because you can’t use Mastodon to interact with it doesn’t mean it isn’t part of the Fediverse. Diaspora is the fediverse, Matrix is the fediverse, Lemmy is the fediverse etc etc. It’s all the Fediverse.
I believe this idea is wrong. The definition of the a fediverse (according to Wikipedia) is
"an ensemble of federated (i.e. interconnected) servers that are used for web publishing (i.e. social networking, microblogging, blogging, or websites) and file hosting, but which, while independently hosted, can communicate with each other. " 1
Yes, a fediverse.
Matrix chats can’t understand Mastodon, Mastodon can’t understand Matrix chats, therefore they cannot exist in the same fediverse. Matrix chats can understand Cactus comments and vice versa, they speak the same language (the Matrix protocol), so they coexist in the Matrix fediverse. Same thing can be said about the Diaspora protocol. It just so happens that ActivityPub is a W3C backed protocol and the most popular for social media, so people refer to its fediverse as “The” fediverse.
I agree there ought to be a name change (call it ActivityPub Fediverse or something along those lines), but I can’t agree that Matrix and Diaspora are part of it.Edit: Add Wikipedia page reference.
It really isn’t that clear cut. Lemmy for example uses ActivityPub, yet right now at least you can not interact with with non-Lemmy instances. Hubzilla on the other hand speaks three protocols, Zot, AP and also Diaspora… and XMPP has a Mastodon gateway.
I think Fediverse is more about the idea and a common cause than a protocol.
I see your point yeah. I guess we should call Fediverse to the collective of all federated software, which is then subdevided into protocol-based networks, where services can interoperate.
It seems like most activitypub apps have a goal of connecting with masto for visibility, but a lot don’t get that far because of development time.
I understand.
