edit:

Anyone have any interesting stories/experiences with undocumented immigration/illegal immigration?

Post does not apply to people who are legally refugees.

I worked with refugees back in 2016. I copied over an old blog post to Gemini.

I never thought I’d see a gemini link in the wild. Thanks for linking the proxy service!

Unfortunately Lemmy isn’t exactly the wilderness - we’re still in the bounds of civilized FOSS here.

True, I sometimes forget that this instance is explicitly for “privacy and FOSS enthusiasts”

Illegal immigration and refugees aren’t the same, right?

The page is just on gemini, so you can get a gemini browser, or use a proxy.

Illegal immigration and refugees aren’t the same thing, though you can be both. That said, it’s hard to be an ‘illegal’ anything without a court hearing, so people often use ‘undocumented immigrant’.

Yea, Bulgaria and Hungary sounded pretty bad from what they said. Serbia did pretty well, considering their GDP.

Yeah a friend knew some guy without papers that fell off his bike and dislocated his shoulder. They needed a driver for their car so I drove them to a local hospital. We asked them if they would treat someone without health insurance and with no papers. The hospital staff did treat him for free, even invented a makeshift arm support thing because the proper thing would have had to be paid for by insurance (it worked just as well).

We went to two hospitals in total I think because it was late at night and we were unsure if they would maybe call the police or something like that. But in the end it all worked out pretty well.
