Hey guys, if I run a server, how independent I am? Can anyone delete my plattform if he doesnt like the discussions on it? Is there any censorship from above? Or is every server selfregulated?

I answered the same question in this comment. The worst we can realistically do against an instance we dont like is 1. not list it on joinlemmy, 2. block it on lemmy.ml (but admins of other instances can still decide to federate).

You could also add a hard-coded instance block in future versions (that similar to the slur filter of course would be easy to remove again).

Uff, that would need to be upgraded almost every time. The thing with slurs is that language doesn’t change so fast but with domains and services…

    Your qurstions are very vague.

if I run a server, how independent I am?

    From who?

Can anyone delete my plattform if he doesnt like the discussions on it?

    Anyone? No. Somebody? Maybe.

Is there any censorship from above?

    Who or what is “above”?

    Or is every server selfregulated?

    Your server your rules.

It depends on who you consider above. The state? Yes, your state’s laws apply.

Other than that, you have the ISPs and, if you run Lemmy on a VPS, the VPS provider.

Except AWS etc. if you rent their servers? Most people consider renting a VPS as “running” a server ;)

This is why I trust LunaNode, 99Stack and others who does respect privacy and gives you options to extend it to an extense.

If you are THAT worried about it though, colocating a Pi or other SoC might be a more realistic option. Just make sure they allow 2.5" disks and you send them in (preferably in RAID if they will allow this). Since SD cards are NOT the “hottest” when it comes to nonstop operations.

apparently lemmy.ml’s description on join-lemmy.org still says it’s the flagship instance. I think it’s better to inform users what they’re joining, so we have less drama.
