The thing is that sooner or later we will be forced into such a system.

I disagree.

Remember, they forced the injection on us, but not everyone took it.

Some see through the evil, and say no.

Eventually the herd will follow those with more courage .

Digital identity systems may be forced upon you, but there’s hope. You can still live free.

Easydns are respected in the industry.

They also have a pro freedom CEO, and used to send out news letters covering intl privacy issues in tech.

Or you may try odysee.com there’s no age restrictions, and many creators are moving there.

bonus: they don’t censor free speech like youtube

I was about to set up my family on matrix, but XMPP is way easier. Especially if you wanna self host.

I don’t work a job yet, and I’m new to server administration

The latter can help you acheive the former.

Get a cheap VPS under 3 usd /month. There’s a few lemmy install guides out there for newbies

DNS is majorly flawed.

Web3 will bring better systems. We’re already seeing decentralized file storage economies. Next will be distributed dns.

Handshake seems promising.

This is like corruption money. The large monopolies pay ‘fines’, while keeping their monopolies.

Meanwhile, any successful startups can’t compete with these monopolies. They must pay the full tax rates, and eventually get bought out by the monopolies.

same. I feel that YT try their hardest to disempower their users.

Other video sites empower users, and are using far more advanced technology stacks.

I’m spending less and less time on this video site.

Lots of great alternatives, that are open and promote community building, instead of censorship.

on the left = current web2 systems

on the right = future web3 disruptors

Nextcloud and dropbox are both web2 insofar as they can only run on someone’s server. IPFS has the potential to provide layer 2 solutions that completely decentralize file storage and empower users (data no longer belongs to whoever owns the server).

I would like to thank the good people of Lemmy here, who helped me avoid the logistical nightmare of setting up a matrix server, and instead choose xmpp. It’s been so fun and easy to get my family on my xmpp server using Conversations/blabber app. Resource usage is minimal, and it works very easily.

Very good break-down.

Besides the meta-data leaking, I would always use xmpp Conversations app over anything else. I don’t find it too outdated UI wise, but I’m no expert in this area. It does feel intuitive - somewhat like watsapp. But the blabber fork does a sligthly better job in UI

Video, voice , files - all e2e ecrypted now on conversations (xmpp) using OMEO

Works well

Conversations is indeed a far better alternative here…

  • It uses a very popular protocol, xmpp
  • works with e2e encryption for text, files, video, audio,
  • it can be self hosted,
  • it’s fully open source, and has a couple of popular forks (like blabber)
  • devs got no funding from intelligence agencies (like matrix has)
  • it’s highly efficient (unlike matrix) and runs on the cheapest of vps servers / raspberry pi

Tried audius. Looks alright. Price/token wise, it’s clearly over-hyped and over-priced.

That said, I love finding new web3 alternatives to those apps of yester-year…

Soundcloud - Audius
Google search - Presearch
Dropbox - IPFS/filecoin
Youtube - Lbry/Odysee or Dtube
… the list goes on

Presearch is what I’m using. Web3 search engine.

xmpp

Just setup a self hosted server. My family are now all chatting on it. Works great and simple to use.

Matrix is an overhead mess, from what people have advised me. Avoid.

Qwant doesn’t accept my IP. I hear from many users that it’s blocked in their location. When I was able to use it a couple of years back, the search results were poor. Especially on long tail keywords.

I’m now using Presearch, which is private and Web3. Works awesome, even better than Google.

Ended up taking your advice, and installed prosody with conversatoins/blabber/chatsecure clients. Works great & tiny resource usage!

Only issue is setting up voice/video calling. Apparently i need to setup and stun and turn server.

“too much choice” issues XMPP has

My one prosody server has 3 different type of clients (including iOS and android), all sending fully end to end encrypted text, video, audio to each-other. Works very well.

In my opinion the “too much choice” is not an issue with XMPP. It’s users opting for convenience while sacrificing privacy. Most people avoid investing the time it takes to figure out XMPP, even if just using a client on a preexisting server.

I even saw that my server can talk to other XMPP servers. So technically, my family could receive messages from other users on different servers.

The thing about Snikket is, just like matrix, they get funding from shady sources.

Thank you. I ended up doing this.

However snikket has some shady funding.

I went for prosody server and set my family up on conversations, blabber, and chatsecure clients. Works great for sending text, pics, videos, voice clips. All e2e encrypted !

As a linux beginner, it was prety easy to setup (provided you have the time). Only issue is with voice/video calls. They use p2p instead of going thru sever, so can’t connect well especially on mobile networks behind NAT. Apparently I need to setup up a stun & turn sever.

Mainstream media, attacking innovators. Character assasination is what they do best.

Brave is a step forward. I have my thoughts on the founder. Tho those are separate from the products long term viability & potential.

Mozilla now is trying to sabotage web3 decentralized identy. Google is now massively censoring information, and discussion. We can’t trust the old browser duopoly to act in our best interests.

Checked out Mojeek: no tracking, their own crawling algo & spiders --> awesome! BUT the Mojeek user base is tiny right now. I tried long tail searching on Mojeek … it highly underperforms in quality compared to G search.

Have you tried Presearch ? Pretty cool & private alternative to G.

It’s alright to believe such. However look at how many people are being injured and dying from the vaccine. Just this fb post got swamped with desperate comments https://www.worldtribune.com/unexpected-and-heartbreaking-thousands-flood-abc-affiliates-facebook-page-with-vaccination-horror-stories/

These are real people dying from an experimental vaccine. That’s mostly what nonewnormal community was sharing. Then they got censored.

You’re correct. VPS on digital ocean.

You’ve really motivated me that i can do it ! I’m at basics amof linux commands and ssh. But could be fun learning the docker basics and ansible

That’s amazing. XMPP seems like the way to go.

The only disadvantage to it is that it’s not federated like Matrix, right ?

Appreciate your alternative here.

Why is Matrix so resource intensive compared to XMPP ?

Thanks for this. I’m gonna read up on the ansible deploy. Most likely for a digital ocean droplet.

Cool . 10 usd per month for basic plan . Would be worth it for family privacy

There’s a lot of confusion, you’re right. People are being deceived.

However, I know of 15 people who died from the experimental vaccine. It’s our duty to share information and help others. Sad they disallowed the community.

Is self hosting a matrix instance worth the effort ?
I want to setup a matrix instance to help increase friends and family's privacy. Is there much value in creating my own instance? I'm a beginner to linux and coding, but am good at following the steps on a video tutorial. Alternatively i could get everyone to sign up on a preexisting instance + download the element app. Thanks for sharing your opinions !
fedilink

Really wanna host a matrix instance for my friends and family. I want them to transition away from fb messaging. Gotta look up the steps !

How technical is it so far ? Would love to try also. Kinda done some coding and droplet creation. But not much linux experience.

Taler: " Anonymous for the payer but not for payee. "

Is this a Bitcoin improvement Protocol or something ?

Three reasons. Reddit:

  1. Increasingly forcing email upon registration
  2. Some subreddits are unavailable to mobile web-browsers. Forces the app instead.
  3. UI has become insane terrible these last years. Can’t use markdown anymore, cant copy paste when writing comments.
  4. Has censorship issues. Even groups like r/nonewnormel get taken down as if they’re doin something worng.
