if there isn’t, does it make sense?

Most certainly, it just very dead so prepared to “bring your own” community to there. As I wouldn’t hold my breath for “new recruits” there…

That’s new to me. What do you mean with “very dead”? The project, or the communities within? I see lotsa activity on Matrix and starting to use it as my default communication channels.

The communities within Matrix itself. It’s been very difficult for me to find any active “rooms” on the Element Client of anything short of a few messages every 12 hours or so if not completely dead like the Minetest “room”.

Well, if there are a few messages every 12 hours, there are at least people active. I would say it’s better than nothing.

But the situation is a bit like the chicken or egg problem: “no one is active, so I won’t be active as well”. It’s not going that’s going to be solved by yet another new chat client or so. Just give it some time and communities will become more active.

And Matrix got bridges to other chat clients, which are pretty nifty if you want to be more active on Matrix. While it somewhat ruins the spirit of decentralisation if you use it with non-decentralised networks, it’s better than nothing ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Exactly but try getting someone from Discord, Facebook’s Messenger, TeleGram etc to switch. They won’t because the availability of communities just isn’t there and had been like this for over a literal year.

I HATE Discord to death since I can’t even use it since my account kept on being “comprised” and because I am DeafBlind I can’t even 2FA into it since they REQUIRES an ACTUAL smartphone for the job. But even with that and that I deleted my Facebook it just isn’t a viable option for me at the moment. Forums and places like this still takes the cake.

It seems like certain communities are active on Matrix, but I kind of share the same experience for topics that interest me… much more activity on IRC or XMPP. Although quite a lot of people seem to be using IRC through Matrix.

Exactly what I am talking about, only select communities are. Not largely interests to say the least. like for instance there even only like a few “gaming” type ones on there and I already tried the tip of the iceberg ones.

XMPP, IRC and Matrix all fill that role. The nicest might be the XMPP client Movim.

Ah true, I even shared this here previously. Totally forgot ;)

I really hope groups will come to Pleroma soon ;)

If you mean specifically with ActivityPub support… well IMHO chatting over AP is not really the best option, but Pleroma (and Soapbox) does have a new chat feature over AP. It is more like Facebook messenger though.

Otherwise as mentioned below: Movim is a nice community oriented XMPP webclient with microblogging features. A ActivityPub compatibility layer is currently being worked on via the similar and Movim compatible Libervia project.

I have not been so much in Pleroma but I checked documentation recently and given what I got from main devs when I use it, it is that they added integration of Pleroma with XMPP for the accounts.

The chat is other story I don’t know but I remember the devs mentioned integrating it too.

yeah, I was wondering if AP makes sense for chatting. Maybe an AP superset may work. thanks for the info

On a bit different use case, Owncast just announced they’ll join the Fediverse.

Note: When questioning if something is on the Fediverse, the most complete list of known federated projects (in all stages of development) is our ActivityPub Application Watchlist (and there’s also a Developer Resources Watchlist). The watchlists are input to the Fediverse Party website. You can also ask on the SocialHub community where the fedi foundation and ecosystem is being evolved collectively.

You mean an ActivityPub speaking IM platform?
As someone was pointing out in another thread the other day, the Fediverse isn’t strictly AP. There are other protocols for federation and thus belong to the Fediverse.

As for the actual question, I don’t know any AP platform that has a good IM. Matrix is federated, pretty good already and looking promising, you should definitely five it a try.
